River Valley Co-op is a consumer-owned cooperative grocery store with two locations in Western Massachusetts. We have been unionized with Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1459 for the last decade with 175 workers in our bargaining unit. This year, beginning in January and ending in June, we held thirteen bargaining sessions with RVC management and their attorneys in a process that was transformative for our union.
Negotiations were tense and at times, adversarial. Workers took a stand in ways they never had before, strengthening our relationships and faith in our ability to fight and win. We made significant strides in the contract, including $2 an hour raises across the board, union orientation for new hires, and protections for our immigrant co-workers. Our contract was ratified with 77 percent of workers turning out for a nearly unanimous ‘yes’ vote.
Until Dignity Becomes Customary: The Determination Of Francia Márquez Mina

Colombia is the third country after Brazil and the United States with the largest Afro-descendant population in the Americas. With more than ten million people of African origins, cultures and practices rooted in Yoruba and Bantu philosophies, traditional languages such as the Palenquero, rhythms and even forms of self-identification that express roots with the continent, in Colombia it is still asked: why Africa?
In 2022, the government of President Gustavo Petro, a government for change, structured in the National Development Plan and foreign policy, the “Africa Strategy 2022-2026,” responded to Vice President Francia Márquez Mina’s initiative to pay more attention to the African continent and to develop concrete, meaningful relations with its countries.

Two years on from Al Aqsa Flood, and its historic significance only deepens. The question of Palestine assuming centre stage at the 2025 UN General Assembly cannot be delinked from the crisis that Al Aqsa Flood has imposed upon zionism and the broader Western world order.[1] The prominence of Palestine at this year’s UNGA is all the more striking given that, just two years earlier, Netanyahu stood before the same body to gloat about the supposed “end” of the Palestinian question and the normalization of zionist relations with Arab states.[2]
The Palestinian question at the UNGA centered, most notably, on the recognition of the State of Palestine by several major Western powers.
Government Shutdown: It Will Take A People’s Movement To Defeat Trump

Democrats, Donald Trump, Government Shutdown, popular power, Republicans
A government shutdown appears highly likely in the coming hours. Despite last-minute negotiations, this dramatic development is coming to pass for one fundamental reason: The Trump administration and the right wing in Congress is determined to destroy working people’s access to healthcare.
In a “government shutdown”, not every part of the federal government stops operating. ICE agents will continue to terrorize immigrant families. The Pentagon war machine will continue to threaten the world. The first programs to be imperiled will be vital lifelines like WIC or food stamps.
Typically, shutdowns have been caused by Republican members of Congress who refuse to pass budget bills unless they include massive cuts to social programs.
Labor Signs On To Save Medicare

In 1965, President Johnson signed Medicare into law, establishing the right to quality healthcare for millions of retired Americans. The labor movement was essential in passing this landmark legislation. It took decades of organizing—with labor working side by side with the Civil Rights and other social movements—to win one of the most robust public health programs in U.S. history.
Now, Medicare is under attack: Profiteering corporations are promoting Medicare Advantage plans as an alternative to Medicare. But Medicare Advantage is not Medicare, it is a privatization scheme that funnels tax dollars through insurance companies to move enrollees into private insurance plans, undermining Medicare.

Billionaire private equity executive Antonio Gracias has had a busy year.
In March, as part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Gracias was sent in search of supposed fraud at the Social Security Administration. A few weeks later — at a rally with his longtime friend and then-head of DOGE, Elon Musk — Gracias claimed to have found it. Echoing a right-wing conspiracy theory, Gracias said an increase in Social Security numbers assigned to noncitizens looked like a move to “import voters.”
In fact, eligible non-citizens are routinely assigned Social Security numbers as part of the federal work authorization process, but they cannot vote. Undocumented immigrants pay billions into Social Security each year but cannot receive benefits.

As we deliberate here, 2.2 million human beings in Gaza are condemned to starvation by the actions of genocide, extermination, and ethnic cleansing carried out by the Zionist regime, which has the military and financial supplies and impunity guaranteed by the United States government.
On behalf of the government and people of Cuba, I reiterate our strongest solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just cause for freedom, independence, and an end to the Zionist occupation.
If the Security Council proves powerless due to the veto that the United States exercises or threatens to exercise, and is unable to take effective measures to stop the barbarism, this General Assembly has the duty and the capacity to promote concrete measures without delay.
The WTO And The Future Of International Trade

The current upheaval in international trade governance, with Trump’s return to the presidency, does not represent the death of global trade itself. But it does represent the final unraveling of the liberal institutional framework that emerged triumphant in the 1990s. The World Trade Organisation (WTO), as the institutional embodiment of this liberal paradigm, finds itself in a systemic crisis. Although the WTO crisis started before Trump’s two terms of office, what we see now is a critical moment which requires a fundamental reconceptualisation of international economic governance.
The 1990s marked the zenith of liberal multilateralism in trade governance. It was characterised by unprecedented coordination among major powers pursuing market liberalisation.

The 26th Political Council of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) concluded on Wednesday with a powerful final declaration underscoring the alliance’s continued resistance to foreign intervention and reaffirmation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. The council meeting brought together high-level representatives from ALBA-TCP member states, who jointly expressed concern over escalating threats to peace, sovereignty, and regional stability—particularly those stemming from the imperialist aggression orchestrated by the United States.
The member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) reaffirmed on Thursday their commitment to the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, within the framework of the XXVI Political Council, held in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
We Who Believe In Democracy Must Fight To Make It Real

We wake daily to new spectacles of violence and humiliation: kidnappings in broad daylight, attacks on unions, LGBTQ people, women, and immigrants, the erosion of long-cherished rights. It’s no longer a tricky question whether we have tipped into authoritarianism. The answer is yes.
To fight back, we have to confront what the Trump administration is exploiting: fear.
We are living in fear, cowed by it. Each workplace and free speech crackdown, each violation of democratic norms, feeds on the paralysis that fear produces. Fear is the fuel of authoritarianism. Democracy is its antidote. But all around us is evidence of how thoroughly democracy has been hollowed out—and it didn’t start with Trump. Democracy is its antidote. Tom Alter’s Firing Marks A New Front In Campus Political Repression

Many people in the United States and around the world were watching the news very intently on September 10, but they could be forgiven for not knowing that a Texas professor was illegally fired for his political views, as it wasn’t much reported on, even in Texas.
History professor Thomas Alter was terminated after being accused by Texas State University president Kelly Damphousse of “conduct that advocates for inciting violence.” This politically motivated firing, while outrageous, is sadly becoming less and less unprecedented — it’s part of a new McCarthyism in American higher education.
The university said the illegal firing was the result of comments made by Alter at the virtual Revolutionary Socialism Conference. The conference was organized by Firebrand, Socialist Horizon, and the International Socialist League in early September, and was geared towards the formation of a revolutionary party.

Trump’s designation of the amorphous group antifa, which has no formal organization or structure, as a terrorist organization permits the state to charge us all as terrorists.
The point is not to go after members of antifa, short for anti-fascist. It is to go after the last vestiges of dissent.
When Barack Obama oversaw the coordinated national campaign to shut down the Occupy encampments, antifa — so named because they dress in black, obscure their faces, move as a unified mass and seek physical confrontations with police – was the excuse.
“I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post.

Multiple Anglo-European states, including the UK, France and Canada, declared their recognition of the State of Palestine, joining the global majority of more than 144 states who had already done so. A statement put out by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer this past Sunday reads: “in the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and of a two state solution.”
Despite his words, the UK continues to collaborate with the Zionist regime by frequently flying spy planes over Gaza, directly collaborating with the occupation forces.

In March of this year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative, a system-wide reform effort. There are more ambitious proposals, including plans to move major UN agencies including UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women from western cities such as New York to Nairobi, Kenya.
But some are calling for an even more transformative agenda of reform, which could shift long-standing power imbalances in the UN from the West and towards other regions. “The agenda set by the UN is focused on its own organisational weaknesses and does not address the largely political questions that scuttle the UN’s work,” writes Vijay Prashad.

There have been many analyses that have been put forth that Trump and his minions represent an attempt at a fascist takeover at worst, and a turning back of the clock in terms of the trade union movement, the women’s movement, the Black liberation movement, every progressive movement that has occurred in the United States over the last couple of centuries at best. They’re attempting to turn back the clock on all of those movements to bring us to a point where we have no democratic rights whatsoever to organize and protest for systemic change or the progressive elimination of the status quo.
From their own declarations and proclamations, we know that Trump and his minions are racist to the core, anti-union to the core, anti-LGTBQ, anti-women, and anti-immigrant.
