Amazon Workers Strike From Black Friday To Cyber Monday

Amazon workers are planning to strike from Black Friday through Cyber Monday to hold the company accountable for “labor abuses, environmental degradation and threats to democracy,” organizers say. The “Make Amazon Pay” protest, organized by UNI Global Union and Progressive International, will take place in 20 different countries and major cities in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Japan and Brazil. “Amazon is everywhere, but so are we. By uniting our movements across borders, we can not only force Amazon to change its ways but lay the foundations of a world that prioritizes human dignity, not Jeff Bezos’ bank balance.”

Ukraine Fires British Storm Shadow Missiles Into Russia

Ukraine fired at least 10 British-provided Storm Shadow missiles into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, The Wall Street Journal and several other media outlets reported on Wednesday. Ukraine has used the Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of up to 155 miles, in strikes on Crimea, but Wednesday’s attack, which targeted the Kursk Oblast, marks the first time Ukrainian forces fired them into the Russian mainland, another major escalation of the proxy war. So far, Russia hasn’t confirmed the use of Storm Shadows. The US and the UK reportedly authorized Ukraine’s use of the Storm Shadows in strikes on Russian territory after President Biden gave the green light for Ukraine to use the ATACMS.

‘As The Coal Age Ends’: UK Announces Ban On New Mines

In a landmark decision, the United Kingdom’s energy secretary Ed Miliband has announced the banning of new coal mines in Britain, as part of the country’s drive to reach net zero. The UK government has committed to introducing legislation to restrict the licensing of future coal mines by amending 1994’s Coal Industry Act, a press release from the UK Government said. “Coal mining powered this country for over 140 years and we owe a huge debt to workers who kept the lights on for homes and businesses across the country. Now the UK is in prime position to lead the way in phasing out coal power around the world, which remains the single largest contributor to global emissions,” said Energy Minister Michael Shanks in the press release.

Fourth Day Of Swarming: Youth Demand Strike In Leeds And Cambridge

On Thursday 14 November, supporters of Youth Demand disrupted traffic in Leeds and Cambridge, demanding a two-way arms embargo on Israel, and for the UK government to halt all new oil and gas licences granted since 2021. As the Canary has been documenting, the group first took action on Remembrance Day, Monday 11 November. Members laid a Palestinian flag-coloured wreath at the Cenotaph, while also blocking roads and disrupting traffic elsewhere in London and in Manchester. At 11am, a group of Youth Demand supporters silently blocked the road outside of the Houses of Parliament during the Armistice Day remembrance service. The group could be seen holding signs which read ‘Never Again for Anyone’ and ‘Over 186,000 Dead’.

Two Notorious Fossil Fuel-Backing Law Firms Got Called Out

Lawyers and climate crisis campaigners held law firms that represent planet-wrecking companies to account on Wednesday 13 November. They targeted the headquarters of two of the most notorious firms: A&O Shearman and Akin. Lawyers and allies staged a protest outside the London headquarters of legal firms A&O Shearman and Akin, as their staff arrived this morning. Representatives from a coalition of groups including Lawyers are Responsible and Fossil Free London held portraits of people across the world whose homes and lives have been devastated by floods and fires due to climate breakdown.

UK COP29 ‘Partners’ Include Firm With Hundreds of Fossil Fuel Clients

The UK’s pavilion at this year’s flagship climate conference is being co-sponsored by an industrial software firm that has worked for some of the world’s biggest polluters, DeSmog can reveal.  This year’s conference will begin next week (11 November) in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the new UK government has vowed to be an international climate leader, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband both set to attend the talks.  The government earlier this week announced the sponsors of the UK COP29 pavilion, which will host a number of events featuring politicians, climate experts, and businesses.

The People Of Bristol Just Grabbed The Baton From Palestine Action

After a years-long campaign against Israel’s arms manufacturer Elbit Systems by Palestine Action, residents of Bristol have joined in – by blockading the genocide-enabling company’s factory in the city. A group of approximately 40 Bristol residents are currently blockading a weapons factory in North Bristol, UK. At approximately 7am on Wednesday 6 November, protestors arrived outside Elbit Systems with banners and Palestine flags. Protestors have chosen Elbit Systems, an Israeli-based military technology company, because Elbit currently supplies 85% of Israel’s drone fleet and land-based military equipment.

Palestine Action Targets Shareholders And Insurers Of Elbit

Palestine Action has upped the ante over UK-based companies propping up Israel’s ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza. This time, the group targeted two different companies – Allianz and BNY Mellon – from two different industries. But the common denominator was their support for the Zionist entity. First, following on from Palestine Action’s concerted actions on Allianz UK offices in October, activists made a return visit to the company’s Glasgow offices, at 58 Waterloo Street, over the weekend. Activists broke glass and sprayed the building red.

The West And Its Media Are Complicit In Sudan’s Crisis

Youth-led grassroots organisations London for Sudan, Cardiff For Sudan, Manchester For Sudan, and Madaniya are organising a nationwide demonstration in London, Cardiff, and Manchester to demand accountability for the devastating war on civilians in Sudan. Titled “Hands Off Sudan: End Western Complicity and Inaction,” this protest is a direct response to the silence surrounding one of the most gravest humanitarian crises of our time. The mobilisation aims to pressure the UK government to take accountability for its role in prolonging the conflict and to call out other international players, including the US, for their involvement in the atrocities.

Journalism And Democracy In A Time Of Genocide

Last month in New York at separate forums, two senior Democrat figures – John Kerry and Hillary Clinton – pointed to what they saw as major problems: the First Amendment was “an obstacle to building consensus,” and the “narrative” in the press needs to be (even more) “consistent.” The challenge presented by the free flow of ideas and information in the digital world, to those accustomed to maintaining control of the narrative, defines our moment in history and the fragility of democratic freedoms. Those calls for less freedom of speech and for more consistency in messaging to the public by the Fourth Estate, come at a time when large sections of the public have lost trust in a legacy media too consistent in its messaging, and incapable of providing the information and analysis that will enable them to know and fully understand what’s happening.

United Kingdom Snubs Council Of Europe Over Assange Inquiry

Britain’s Home Office is making a “grave mistake” by ignoring a call from the Council of Europe to review its treatment of Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder’s wife has warned. The council’s parliamentary assembly, of which the U.K. is a member, passed a resolution earlier this month designating Assange as a “political prisoner”. Assange endured five years in Belmarsh maximum security prison in London before being released in June, and flying to his native Australia. The U.K. government had incarcerated him while the U.S. pursued extradition proceedings in the British courts. His treatment has outraged the Council of Europe.

Iran ‘Successfully Confronts’ Israeli Attack On Tehran Military Sites

Iranian air defenses successfully confronted an Israeli attack on military targets near the capital of Tehran in the early hours of 26 October, semi-official Tasnim News reported. The Air Defense Base issued a statement saying that “Iran’s air defenses intercepted and successfully confronted the acts of aggression” carried out Saturday by “the criminal, illegitimate and fake regime of Israel.” The statement added that Israel sought to escalate tensions in the conflict by launching attacks on military sites in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam, resulting in only “limited damage.” The Iranian army later issued a statement announcing that two soldiers were killed in the attack. The statement said they were “martyred during confrontation with the projectiles fired by the criminal Zionist regime."

UK Police Raid Home, Seize Devices Of Electronic Intifada’s Asa Winstanley

British counterterrorism police on Thursday raided the home and seized several electronic devices belonging to The Electronic Intifada’s associate editor Asa Winstanley. Approximately 10 officers arrived at Winstanley’s North London home before 6 am and served the journalist with warrants and other papers authorizing them to search his house and vehicle for devices and documents. A letter addressed to Winstanley from the “Counter Terrorism Command” of the Metropolitan Police Service indicates that the authorities are “aware of your profession” as a journalist but that “notwithstanding, police are investigating possible offenses” under sections 1 and 2 of the Terrorism Act (2006). These provisions set out the purported offense of “encouragement of terrorism.”

Palestine Action Hit Ten Branches Of Israel Genocide-Enabler Allianz

Allianz has previously been described as Elbit’s “principle institutional shareholder”, at-one-point owning over 2% of the company. The finance company continues to hold thousands of shares in Elbit Systems Ltd, while its subsidiary ‘Allianz Insurance Products Trust’ provides insurance services for Elbit Systems UK, including employment insurance. One year on from the start of the genocide in Gaza, these nationwide action serves as a reminder that, throughout the past twelve months, Western capital has continued to profit from the mass murder of Palestinians. Allianz’ profit books, its returns on its investments, have been bolstered by the hundreds of military technologies which Elbit provides in service of genocide.

Burn The Planet And Lock Up The Dissidents

Norfolk, U.K. — I am sitting with Roger Hallam, his gray hair pulled back in a ponytail, in the visitor’s room at HM Prison Wayland. On the walls are large photographs of families picnicking on lawns, verdant meadows and children playing. The juxtaposition of the photographs, no doubt hung to give the prison visiting room a homey feel, is jarring. There is no escaping, especially with prison guards circulating around us, where we are. Roger and I sit on squat upholstered chairs and face each other across from a low, white plastic table. Roger’s lanky frame tries to adjust to furniture designed to accommodate children.
