US Imperialism

The Restoration Of The Monroe Doctrine

Since Donald Trump’s reelection as president of the United States, the world has watched in shock as US foreign policy has grown increasingly unilateral and aggressive, raising deep concerns about the future of international politics. These concerns stem not only from the record of his previous term but also from the growing resurgence of interventionist and unilateral policies that have gradually regained prominence in recent years—developments that have accelerated during the early days of Trump’s new administration. Given the campaign promises made under the familiar slogan Make America Great Again (MAGA), such concerns were far from unfounded. And they were only amplified by the administration’s early actions.

Veterans For Peace Condemns Deployment Of National Guard In DC

Veterans For Peace unequivocally condemns President Trump’s unlawful deployment of the National Guard to Washington, DC. This follows the outrageous deployment of National Guard and U.S. Marines to the streets and parks of Los Angeles in support of ICE terror tactics in a city where as many as one in ten residents are undocumented workers. Even U.S. military veterans have been targeted and deported.

West Asia Is Lurching Toward War

There is extremely alarming news about the situation around Iran. In consultations with the Trump administration — rather, in deference to the command from Washington — the E3 countries (Britain, France and Germany) who are the remaining western signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as JCPOA, have initiated the process of triggering the so-called snapback mechanism with the aim to reimpose all U.N. sanctions against Iran on the plea that it has breached the terms of the ten-year old agreement. A joint statement issued in the three European capitals on Aug. 25 notified the U.N. Security Council that Tehran is “in significant non-performance of its commitments under the JCPOA” to give a 30-day notice “before the possible reestablishment of previously terminated United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

Washington Sanctions Palestinian Rights Groups For Aiding ICC

The US has imposed sanctions on three Palestinian human rights organizations that previously petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Israel for war crimes in Gaza. “Today, the Trump Administration is sanctioning three NGOs – Al Haq, Al Mezan, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights – for assisting in the ICC's illegitimate actions against Israel. The United States will continue to protect our own sovereignty and the sovereignty of our allies from the ICC's overreach,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on Thursday evening on X. The announcement first appeared as a notice on the US Treasury Department's website on Thursday. In November 2023, the organizations requested that the ICC investigate Israel for war crimes in response to its actions in Gaza, including carrying out airstrikes on heavily populated civilian areas, imposing a complete siege to cut off food, water, and electricity to the civilian population, and causing the mass displacement of residents.

President Maduro Explains Venezuela’s Position On US Military Deployment

On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro held a press conference with representatives of international media in which he analyzed the current geopolitical situation in the Caribbean. “There are still those who want to impose supremacism and view us from afar as they did in the era of colonization,” Maduro said, questioning the patterns of international domination. “The heirs of the old colonialisms and domination hold power and still view our nations with contempt and arrogance,” he emphasized, highlighting that global awareness against all forms of supremacism is awakening. “A global awareness is rising that will not allow, under any circumstances, the imposition of a new type of domination and colonialism, either in Our America or in the rest of the world.”

As War Ships Arrive; Defend Venezuela Against US Attack

On August 8, President Donald Trump declared that, on the basis of the discredited and fake “War on Drugs,” the U.S. reserved the option to engage in military action in any country, anywhere. In addition, Trump announced that he increased a bounty for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from $25 million to $50 million. Following these announcements, the Pentagon war machine moved into action and U.S. warships set sail for the Caribbean. The working class, anti-war, anti-imperialist movement and all movements for social justice and change in the United States have a responsibility to prepare for combating every U.S. war move. Today we must focus attention on the growing threat of a U.S. attack on Venezuela.

Latin America And The Caribbean In The Face Of US Desperation

The general consensus in Latin America and the Caribbean is that organized crime is the main threat to the region's security. What is usually omitted is the central role of the US government in manipulating the regional structures of organized crime and money laundering. US government propaganda uses the alibi of fighting organized crime and drug trafficking to justify its extensive military presence in the region. Lately, it has served the Trump administration in order to threaten Mexico with possible military incursions and to mobilize warships with amphibious assault capabilities and contingents of marines to intimidate Venezuela. In fact, for decades it has been conclusively demonstrated that US financial institutions launder drug trafficking money on a large scale and that the US authorities encourage organized crime and drug trafficking by means of the CIA and its so-called drug enforcement agency, the DEA.

US Forces Destroy Small ‘Venezuelan’ Boat Allegedly Carrying Drugs

President Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that US troops deployed to the Caribbean attacked and destroyed a “drug ship” that had left Venezuela. “Just a few minutes ago, literally, we shot down a vessel that was carrying drugs, a large amount of drugs. You’ll see it and read about it. It just happened moments ago,” the US president said at a press conference in the Oval Office. He said he had just been briefed on the matter by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Daniel “Razin” Caine. “We have a lot of drugs coming into our country, coming in for a long time, and they just came out of Venezuela… A lot of things are coming out of Venezuela, so we got rid of them,” Trump said.

The Great Hoax Against Venezuela: Oil Geopolitics Disguised As ‘War On Drugs’

During my time as head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), I frequently travelled to Colombia, Bolivia, Peru and Brazil, but never to Venezuela. There was simply no need. The Venezuelan government’s collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking was among the best in South America, rivalled only by Cuba’s impeccable record. This makes Trump’s narrative of a “narco-state” in Venezuela sound like geopolitically motivated slander. The 2025 World Drug Report tells a story that is the opposite of the narrative peddled by the Trump administration. Piece by piece, the report dismantles the geopolitical lie built around the “Cartel de los Soles”, an entity as mythical as the Loch Ness Monster, but which is useful for justifying sanctions, blockades and threats of military intervention against a country which, incidentally, sits on one of the planet’s largest oil reserves.

Venezuela And The Heart Of The Struggle For A New World

“We will defend our independence with all the means at our disposal and we will raise our protest before the Spanish nation and its intelligent people, who we believe do not dispute the legality of our demands,” said Abd el-Krim, a Riffian revolutionary leader who resisted French and Spanish colonial occupation in the early 20th century. These words, which distinguish between the power that oppresses and the people who can understand and resist, resonate today more strongly than ever from Venezuela. Because Venezuela is not only a country beset by imperialism: it is an ethical, political, and cultural trench in the midst of a world collapsing amid wars, genocides, recycled fascisms, and markets that devour peoples.

Global Day Of Solidarity With Venezuela Against US Interventionism

The Global Day of Solidarity with Venezuela and for Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean was held in locations around the world. On Saturday, August 30, mass organizations, political parties, and social movements from various countries united under the slogan “Venezuela is not a threat, Venezuela is a hope” to express their support for Venezuela and peace in Latin America. The solidarity event comes in response to the recent interventionist actions and threats by the United States Government against the Venezuelan people and government, which include the deployment of military vessels in the Caribbean Sea as an excuse for intervention and destabilization, as well as the increase of a bounty on President Nicolás Maduro’s head, whom the US falsely accuses of association with drug trafficking.

Haiti: Business Oligarchy Takes Full Control Of De Facto Government

With Laurent Saint-Cyr’s recent inauguration as president of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) of Haiti, alongside Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Haiti’s de facto government will be controlled by representatives of the economic oligarchies for six months. This situation is a cause of concern for the people and may have long-term consequences for the country. The CPT was formed in a context of political crisis in April 2024, following the forced resignation of then-Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Its announced objectives are to restore security and organize new elections before February 2026, while in reality, it was created to serve US imperialist interests in the country and to suppress any expression of popular rebellion.

China To Washington: ‘Latin America And Caribbean Are Not Anyone’s Backyard’

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that “Latin America and the Caribbean are not anyone’s backyard,” in response to recent reports in which the commander of the US Southern Command accused China of “infiltrating and plundering resources” from countries in the region. Guo Jiakun urged the United States to “let the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean choose their own course of action.” He added that “the countries of the region have the right to choose their own development paths and partners independently.” The Chinese official dismissed the US accusations as “statements that contradict the facts and repeat outdated phrases,” which “once again expose the deep-rooted Cold War and confrontational mentality of some in the US.”

Eco-Solidarity And The Threat To Venezuela: Act Now!

The Trump administration is sending three warships with 4,500 marines to the coast of Venezuela, raising tensions and stoking fears of a possible US invasion. This act is the latest in a series of provocations carried out in the name of the fake War on Drugs. The newest threat follows the announcement of a $50 million dollar bounty for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and a declaration by the White House asserting the military option to invade the borders of any nation in order to combat alleged narcotraffickers. This justification, however, is not sincere. The Drug War is the new Big Lie used as a flimsy cover for war and repression.

Unaudited Power: The Military Budget Nobody Controls

The U.S. federal debt has now passed $37 trillion and is growing at the rate of $1 trillion every five months. Interest on the debt exceeds $1 trillion annually, second only to Social Security in the federal budget. The military outlay is also close to $1 trillion, consuming nearly half of the discretionary budget. As a sovereign nation, the United States could avoid debt altogether by simply paying for the budget deficit with Treasury-issued “Greenbacks,” as Abraham Lincoln’s government did. But I have written on that before (see here and here), so this article will focus on that other elephant in the room, the Department of Defense. Under the Constitution, the military budget should not be paid at all, because the Pentagon has never passed an audit.
