US Border Force Reported To The UN For Human Rights Abuse

A legal non-profit in the US has sent damning evidence of US border force officials appalling persisting record of human rights abuses at open air detention sites, to the United Nations. On Monday 7 April, the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (CHRCL) and the Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC) submitted a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) on US Customs and Border Protection (CBP)’s continued human rights abuses at open air detention sites. The CHRCL is a legal non-profit that protects and advances the rights of migrants.

Trump Administration Revokes Hundreds Of Student Visas

The Trump administration has reportedly revoked hundreds of student visas, amid a widening crackdown on the U.S. Palestine movement. In recent days, dozens of schools have announced that draconian measures by the Trump administration have targeted some of their students. The list includes UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State, Minnesota State University, the University of Kentucky, Northeastern, and Harvard. Last month Secretary of State Marco Rubio guessed that he had revoked about 300 visas since arriving in office. “I don’t know actually if it’s primarily student visas,” Rubio told reporters.

The US signaled on 7 April that it is planning to step up its violent campaign of airstrikes on Yemen, which have killed dozens since last month, including women and children. "It's been a bad three weeks for the Houthis, and it's about to get worse," US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Monday in the Oval Office, while seated near US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “It's been a devastating campaign, whether it's underground facilities, weapons manufacturing, bunkers, troops in the open-air defense assets – we are not going to relent, and it's only to get more unrelenting until the Houthis declare they will stop shooting at our ships,” Hegseth added.

Mahmoud Khalil’s Immigration Status Will Be Determined Friday

Mahmoud Khalil’s immigration hearings began in Louisiana on April 8. Supporters who tried to observe the proceedings virtually were not allowed in. ABC News reported that during this hearing, Judge Jamee Comans determined that the Trump administration has 24 hours to provide evidence of allegations they’ve made to justify Khalil’s deportation. The administration has made bogus claims that Khalil poses a threat to national security. Once Khalil’s team has reviewed and responded to whatever information the Trump administration provides, Comans will decide at another hearing this Friday if Khalil can stay in the United States.

Two Youth Demand supporters have laid body bags at David Lammy’s door to highlight his role in continuing to facilitate Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The supporters are demanding that the UK government impose a total trade embargo on Israel, and make the super rich and fossil fuel elite pay damages to communities and countries most harmed by fossil fuel burning. At around 11am on Tuesday 8 April, two Youth Demand supporters displayed a sign over the foreign secretary’s hedge which read- ‘Lammy Stop Arming Genocide’. At his door the pair laid child-sized body bags representing the 17,400 children that we know of who have been murdered during Israel’s genocidal rampage since 7 October 2023.

Honduras expects to receive 33 representatives at the upcoming annual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a regional organization founded on December 3, 2011, in Caracas, Venezuela. Since 2013, member countries have held annual summits in various locations, except for 2022. According to the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, the meeting, to be held on Wednesday, April 9, signifies “a step towards the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean, facing global challenges such as climate change, drug trafficking, and migration.” CELAC was created to foster regional unity in the face of the most pressing geopolitical challenges, as well as create an alternative to the US-dominated Organization of American States (OAS).

On Saturday 5 April, the Chinese government set out its position opposing the US’s unilateral imposition of tariffs on all its trading partners, including China. The statement correctly noted that these tariffs are in clear breach of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, and threaten to seriously disrupt the global economy. “Using tariffs as a tool of extreme pressure for selfish gain is a textbook example of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying.” It’s clear that China is the main target of the US’s tariff blackmail, which is being used to undermine China’s growth, to force China to accept the US’s terms of trade, to bully other countries into siding with the US against China, and to punish China for its success in building a modern economy and its refusal to bow down to US hegemony.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro signed an economic emergency decree on Tuesday, April 8, during a televised meeting with telecommunications and economic leaders. He framed the move as a response to what he called a US-led “tariff war” destabilizing global trade systems, alongside the revival of the “maximum pressure” strategy aimed at suffocating Venezuela’s economy. The decree, pending approval by the National Assembly, seeks to bolster Venezuela’s economy amid escalating international tensions and US aggression. Both the government, through its spokesman Homero Figueroa , as well as the paramilitary organization Antigua Orden Dominicana (AOD), which organized the march, are washing their hands and accusing alleged infiltrators of the violence, all in an attempt to do damage control and evade responsibility. Blooming from the tumult of the Civil Rights era, Black bookstores emerged during the Black Arts Movement as cultural hubs where some of the first seeds of slam poetry, spoken word and hip-hop were planted. In 1968, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover hoped to curb ​“the establishment of Black extremist bookstores which represent propaganda outlets for revolutionary and hate publications,” ordering his agents to pursue a targeted, nationwide surveillance. Today, a new generation of Black bookstores is blossoming amid the upheaval of the Movement for Black Lives.
