Educate!

Education is the foundation of political change. In this section we provide news and analyses of current events that you won’t likely read or hear in the corporate media. Our sources are from organizations and independent media outlets free of corporate and government propaganda. We strongly encourage you to share these articles by email and social media so that together we create an echo chamber that overcomes the influence of the oligarchy. You will find large social media sharing buttons on the left side of each article when you open the article to read.

There’s No Upside To Trump

“Trump could surprise on the upside,” writes Edward Luce, who claims to know “what Trump most cares about.” Lacking intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the president-elect’s personal thoughts, us non-pundits are relegated to looking at other indicators. We can try to decipher Trump’s abysmal cabinet picks. “If Trump has nominated second-tier establishment types for powerful positions that is partly because so many of the more accomplished practitioners have migrated to the Democrats,” according to a London Review of Books commentator.

Israel’s Genocide Day 423: Israeli Siege Of North Gaza Intensifies

The UN agency responsible for providing humanitarian relief to Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, announced on Sunday that it has suspended receiving and delivering aid to Gaza through the Karam Abu Salem crossing between Israel and Rafah in southern Gaza, the main entry point to the Strip for humanitarian aid. The agency, which is the largest supplier of aid in Gaza, said in a statement that the road for delivering aid to the crossing point has been dangerous for months, especially since the Israeli invasion of Rafah last April. UNRWA also said that several truck drivers and aid delivery workers had been killed or injured, adding that “it can not continue to put their lives at risk.”

Neocons Try Again in Syria

On the neocon list of ways to make the world safer for Israel, Iran originally occupied pride of place. “Real men go to Tehran!” was the muscular brag. But Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was persuaded to acquiesce in a less ambitious plan — to “do Iraq” and remove the “evil dictator” in Baghdad first. As the invaders/occupiers got bogged down in Iraq, it seemed more sensible to “do Syria” next. With the help of “friendly services,” the neocons mounted a false-flag chemical attack outside Damascus in late August 2013, blaming it on President Bashar al-Assad, whom U.S. President Barack Obama had earlier said, “had to go.”

Ukraine’s ‘White Wolves’ Fighting Alongside Extremists In Syria

Ukraine’s White Wolves special operations unit is deployed in northern Syria alongside Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) militants who are waging an assault against the Syrian government in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, according to multiple sources cited by Al Mayadeen on 3 December. There is “direct Ukrainian involvement … in ongoing battles against the Syrian army across the fronts of Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib,” Al Mayadeen’s sources said. “The Ukrainian units operating in Syria are part of the White Wolf group, which is affiliated with Ukraine's Security Service.” The White Wolves unit is known for its expertise in the development and use of drones.

Syrian Dirty War’s Secret Origins

On November 27th, ultra-extremist militants Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a vast offensive in Syria. Within days, the Turkey-backed faction seized significant swaths of Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city, and advances elsewhere continue. While disinformation on the scale and success of HTS’ incursions abounds on social media, establishment news outlets remain a redoubtable source of manipulation and deceit. No context to the current upsurge of violence is provided, although reference has been widely made to supposedly “peaceful” protests in 2011 that produced the decade-long Syrian civil war.

Marco Rubio: From ‘Perfect Little Puppet’ To Most Dangerous Man Alive

With the appointment of Marco Rubio to the post of Secretary of State, the Trump administration has elevated one of the most pro-war extremists ever to serve in the cabinet of the United States of America. In this article, MintPress highlights Rubio’s history as one of the most reliable warmongering voices in Washington, an individual who has led or supported many of America’s most aggressive foreign policy decisions, including military interventions, coups, and sanctions. Trump, who promises to be the “most pro-Israel president ever,” has picked a cabinet replete with neoconservative, pro-war voices.

Nigerian President Enforced Violent Crackdown On Hunger Protests

Extrajudicial executions, mass arrests, custodial torture and charges of treason were among the methods used by the Nigerian government to crack down on protests this August against rising hunger and economic hardships. Nigerian civil society, demanding a reversal of President Bola Tinubu’s aggressive implementation of IMF policies that brought about this cost of living crisis on Africa’s largest population, led these protests for 10 days at the beginning of August. In a report released on November 28, titled “Bloody August,” Amnesty International (AI) documented 24 killings, while “scores of additional cases reported by activists and journalists” are yet to be verified.

World Leaders Fail to Reach Agreement on Global Plastics Treaty

Efforts by nations to come to an agreement on a global plastics treaty failed on Monday. While more than 100 countries sought to put a limit on the world’s plastics production — in addition to tackling recycling and cleanup — oil and gas companies were only prepared to address the problem of plastic waste. The meeting in Busan, South Korea was supposed to be the last, but negotiations will continue into 2025, reported The Associated Press. “It is clear that there is still persisting divergence,” said Inger Andersen, the United Nations Environment Programme’s executive director, as Reuters reported.

Zelensky Is Willing To Cede Territory In Exchange For NATO Protection

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was willing to temporarily cede territory to Russia to bring an end to the war in exchange for NATO protection over Ukraine. “If we want to stop the hot stage of the war, we should take under [the] NATO umbrella the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control,” Zelensky told Sky News. “That’s what we need to do fast, and then Ukraine can get back the other part of its territory diplomatically.” Zelensky’s suggestion is almost certainly a non-starter for Russia since the invasion was launched to keep Ukraine out of NATO, but it does reflect a shift in his position.

Washington Post Attacks Eritrean Americans For Organizing Defense

Eritrea, a Red Sea nation that defies the dictates of Western powers, pursues egalitarian social development, eschews IMF and World Bank debt, demands a fair price for its natural resources, and refuses to collaborate with AFRICOM , the US Africa Command. Not surprisingly, Eritrea is heavily sanctioned by the U.S. for alleged human rights abuse. Exclusion from the SWIFT system for conducting international financial transactions puts it in the exclusive company of the West’s other favorite bogeymen, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Western politicians, pundits, and press relentlessly castigate Eritrea—never mind their headchopping friends across the Red Sea—with the most recent salvo coming from the Washington Post.

Small Farming, Urbanisation And Climate Migration

Bangladesh is a small country that sits within the Northeast of South Asia with India wrapped around it, and Myanmar to the South. Despite its small size and relatively recent independence, Bangladesh plays an oversized role in the way poverty, development, climate change and urbanisation are imagined globally. Often in discussions of climate change the conversation turns to Bangladesh as a country imagined to be sinking, throwing out waves of climate migrants across the world. For many reasons this vision is wrong. I don’t have space to go into this in depth here  (see further references below). Instead, I want to tell a different but connected story about Bangladesh, urbanisation and the environment.

Rich-People-Friendly Think Tank Confirms Richest Pay Under One Percent In Annual Taxes

The Washington, D.C.-based Tax Foundation has long functioned as an apologist for America’s deepest pockets. Analysts at the Foundation have spent years assuring us that our wealthiest are paying far more than their fair tax share — in the face of a reality that has our richest aggressively growing their share of the wealth all Americans are creating. This past August, the Biden administration’s Treasury Department commissioned a new study that documented just how little of their wealth America’s richest are actually paying in taxes. Last month, the Tax Foundation responded with a predictable critique.

Women In The Biden Administration Complicit In Israeli Genocide Of Gaza

As we in the United States sat down to Thanksgiving dinners, Palestinians in Gaza on Day 419 of the Israeli genocide of Gaza and U.S. complicity in that genocide are facing starvation, lack of water, tents purposefully destroyed by U.S. bombs dropped by Israeli warplanes and drones and rain and cold from the winter storms. Here in the U.S. families are enjoying meals prepared by mothers and wives. Yet, many mothers and wives and aunties of these families have day jobs with the Biden administration and have been key participants in the U.S. complicity in the Israeli genocide of the 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza whom we known have been killed by U.S. weapons, the hundreds of thousands who have been injured and perhaps 100,000 who are still buried underneath the rubble.

Fear Is Still The Motivation For Black Voters

The always prescient Glen Ford wrote those words in February 2016 as he correctly hypothesized that Black voters would continue their tradition of supporting the candidate they believed was most likely to defeat a republican in that presidential election year. Eight years later his words still ring true. Donald Trump’s defeat of Kamala Harris has engendered anger, fear, and retrograde politics, but surprisingly little criticism of the Democratic Party which failed its most loyal voters so spectacularly. The Kamala Harris/Tim Walz campaign raised more than $1.5 billion , more than the Donald Trump/J.D. Vance campaign was able to raise.

Is The United States Headed For Another Middle East War?

Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has taken a hardline position against Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, advocating policies aimed at reigniting the conflict between Riyadh and Sana’a. Critics warn that his approach could risk dragging the United States into a direct confrontation, escalating tensions in an already volatile region. As vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Marco Rubio has carved out a reputation as a steadfast proponent of hardline policies, particularly against Yemen’s Ansar Allah-led government and its allies. Rubio, who has received over $1 million from pro-Israel donors, has consistently aligned himself with neoconservative hawks.
