Caracas and several cities in Venezuela witnessed a new round of demonstrations supporting the Bolivarian Revolution as well as a few small far-right demonstrations called by those who got defeated in the presidential elections held on July 28 but claim victory nonetheless. The low turnout in the opposition demonstrations contrast sharply with their claim of having received 7.3 million of votes in the presidential elections.
The “massive” march promised by the far right for this Saturday, August 17, was a clear failure. The call for protests was unable to attract large crowds in Caracas and other cities as planned, despite the calls of María Corina Machado and an army of influencers and paid journalists on social media platforms asking Venezuelans to join the marches.

The commemoration in Dhaka of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, considered to be the founder of the nation, was marked by violent attacks. Hundreds of people had gathered in Dhaka to honor Bangladesh’s first prime minister, but were met with large-scale violence by protesters, including students. The incident comes just two weeks after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister of Bangladesh.
Those participating in the commemoration, which included members of Hasina’s Awami League, were reportedly attempting to reach Sheikh’s home but were prevented from doing so by students who also blocked journalists trying to cover the incident.
Thou Shalt Not Commit Genocide

There is only one way to end the ongoing genocide in Gaza. It is not through bilateral negotiations. Israel has amply demonstrated, including with the assassination of the lead Hamas negotiator, Ismail Haniyeh, that it has no interest in a permanent ceasefire. The only way for Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians to be halted is for the U.S. to end all weapons shipments to Israel. And the only way this will take place is if enough Americans make clear they have no intention of supporting any presidential ticket or any political party that fuels this genocide.
The arguments against a boycott of the two ruling parties are familiar: It will ensure the election of Donald Trump. Kamala Harris has rhetorically shown more compassion than Joe Biden.

The Doha negotiations did not yield any developments as “Israel” is clinging to its positions, a senior Palestinian Resistance official told Al Mayadeen.
Moreover, a senior Hamas source pointed out that what the movement’s leadership was informed of Friday regarding the results of the Doha ceasefire meetings does not include a commitment to what was agreed upon on July 2.
This follows a statement that senior officials from the governments of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt will reconvene in Cairo before the end of next week with an aim to conclude a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and a prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and “Israel”.

Recent student-led campus encampments in solidarity with Palestine prompted considerable media conversation. But, according to a new FAIR study examining TV and newspaper discussions in the period from April 21 to May 12, those conversations rarely included students themselves—and even fewer included student protesters.
FAIR examined how often key corporate media discussion forums contain student and activist voices. The Sunday morning shows (ABC’s This Week, CBS’s Face the Nation, NBC’s Meet the Press, CNN’s State of the Union and Fox News Sunday) brought on no students or activists, opting instead to speak primarily with government officials.

Voters in the United States who feel compelled to choose between political duopoly presidential candidates are once again faced with two terrible choices. Donald Trump is the known quantity, a former president and a man of very limited intelligence. So much so that he recently confused Willie Brown with Jerry Brown . He is unsuited for anything other than what he did most of his life, promote himself as a business success when his companies filed for bankruptcy on six occasions . In 2016 he rallied white peoples’ feelings of grievance, pretended to be a champion of working people and won an electoral college vote due to his opponent’s arrogance and incompetence.

Who do we want to lead? With genocide ongoing, regional wars brewing, and climate change records breaking, who is a safe pair of hands?
Today a choice exists; an alternative to the US-led international order is being built, with China at its center.
A Western survey, the Edelman Trust Barometer, found China to be the country rated highest globally in terms of people’s trust in their government.
China has held the top spot every year but one since 2018, with a comprehensive trust index of 79 in 2024. The US is down at a mere 46.

Organized labor is in the midst of a fierce campaign to make inroads at auto manufacturers in the South, most recently at the Mercedes plant in Vance, Alabama, where on May 17, 56% of workers voted narrowly against joining the United Auto Workers. But a few months before the unsuccessful vote at Mercedes, workers 100 miles away at an EV bus manufacturing plant in Anniston, Alabama, unionized and won a historic contract. In January 2024, the majority of the around 600 workers at a plant run since 2013 by New Flyer, the largest transit bus manufacturer in North America, signed a union card to join the International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA).
Ten Theses On The Far Right Of A Special Type

There has been widespread consternation about how to understand Donald Trump’s emergence as a serious candidate for US president since 2016. Far from an isolated phenomenon, Trump rose to power alongside other strongmen such as Viktor Orbán (prime minister of Hungary since 2010), Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (president of Turkey since 2014), and Narendra Modi (prime minister of India since 2014). People like this, who came to power and cemented their rule through liberal institutions, seem to be impossible to permanently remove through the ballot box. It has become clear that a rightward shift is taking place in liberal democratic states, whose constitutions emphasise multi-party elections while allowing the space for one-party rule to be gradually established.

Gaza ceasefire talks resumed on Thursday, August 15, in the Qatari capital of Doha with the notable absence of one of the negotiating parties, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
Over the past several months, the talks have involved three main mediators including the United States, Egypt, and Qatar in addition to warring parties Israel and Hamas, and have passed through different stages of obstructions and stalemate recriminations.
Hamas had already announced on Sunday, August 11 that it rejected an invitation to attend the new round of negotiations because it wants a return to the Biden-backed ceasefire proposal and the amendments it submitted to that plan on July 2.

Since the beginning of the Russian Special Military Operation in Ukraine, the African continent has become a major battleground in the renewed Cold War between Moscow and Washington.
In recent weeks in response to an attack by rebels in the north of Mali in Tinzaoten, the military government based in Bamako has revealed that Ukrainian military forces were involved in an ambush against its soldiers and Russian security advisors on July 27.
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have formed an Alliance of Sahel States (AES) which has formerly broken with the western-backed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ukraine’s military intelligence recently claimed to have had a role in the massive ambush coordinated with Tuareg rebels that killed Russian troops operating alongside Malian armed forces in Mali, the Francophone West African country.
The assertion has sparked fears that parts of Africa might become a proxy war zone for Russia and Ukraine.
As the war in Ukraine continues, President Volodymyr Zelensky is looking beyond the stubborn battlefield on his country’s front line for other victories. In Africa, the apparent success in Mali could be largely rhetorical, several analysts told PassBlue.

The White House has reversed the statement made by US President Joe Biden, in which he declared that he supported the proposal to run a new election in Venezuela, continuing the zigzag of the imperial line on its statements regarding the Latin American nation.
Biden was questioned by a journalist this Thursday, August 15, about whether he “supported new elections in Venezuela,” to which the US president, in a newly overt display of interventionism, replied, “Yes, I do.” The White House then had to reverse their president’s statement and “clarify” what the US president supposedly meant.

James Baldwin would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Aug. 2, had he lived so long. He didn’t: He died young.
He was but 63 on Dec. 1, 1987, the day he slipped away at the shabby-grand house in Saint–Paul-de–Vence, France, where he had lived since 1970, a refugee from … from a lot of things, not least America and what it was on the way to becoming.
There is a long, strange story behind the house and Baldwin’s residence in it, told satisfactorily in Jules Farber’s not-brilliantly-written James Baldwin: Escape From America, Exile in Provence (Pelican Publishing, 2016).

CNN’s Fraudulent Analysis Of Fraud In The Venezuelan Presidential Election

In the quarter century of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, initiated by the election of Hugo Chávez and continued by his successor Nicolás Maduro, 31 national elections have been held. Invariably, the US-backed opposition claimed fraud in all but the two contests that they won. Equally unvaryingly has been the corporate press’s supporting and indeed embellishing of the claims of fraud as described below.
The moment that Venezuela’s election authority (CNE in its Spanish initials) reported that incumbent Maduro had prevailed in the July 28 presidential contest over his nearest challenger, Edmundo González, howls of fraud were to be heard throughout the world’s corporate press.
