The U.S. atomic destruction of 140,000 people at Hiroshima and 70,000 at Nagasaki was never “necessary” because Japan was already smashed, no land invasion was needed and Japan was suing for peace. The official myth that “the bombs saved lives” by hurrying Japan’s surrender can no longer be believed except by those who love to be fooled.
The long-standing fiction has been destroyed by the historical record kept in U.S., Soviet, Japanese and British archives — now mostly declassified — and detailed by Ward Wilson in his book Five Myths About Nuclear Weapons (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013).
Greg Mitchell’s Atomic Cover-Up (Sinclair Books, 2011) also helps explain the durability of the “saved lives” ruse.
United States Backed Ethnic Cleansing Of Serbs
August 4, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Operation Storm. Little known outside the former Yugoslavia, the military campaign unleashed a genocidal cataclysm that violently expelled Croatia’s entire Serb population. Dubbed “the most efficient ethnic cleansing we’ve seen in the Balkans” by Swedish politician Carl Bildt, Croat forces rampaged UN-protected areas of the self-declared Serb Republic of Krajina, looting, burning, raping and murdering their way across the province. Up to 350,000 locals fled, many on foot, never to return. Meanwhile, thousands were summarily executed.
As these hideous scenes unfolded, UN peacekeepers charged with protecting Krajina watched without intervening. Meanwhile, US officials strenuously denied the horrifying massacres and mass displacement amounted to ethnic cleansing, let alone war crimes.

As if we needed more examples of the incompetence and insanity of the current federal regime, along comes their obsession with Alcatraz, in both the nominal and the actual sense. They have been looking at the historic San Francisco Bay island prison, now a museum, with the idea in mind of renovating it and reopening it as an active prison. This foolishness is on the heels of opening a new prison facility in the swamps of Florida that they have christened, with great pleasure, “Alligator Alcatraz.” Both ideas come from the diseased tyrannical minds exercising destructive control over the whole country and assaulting what little remains of morality.

The Israeli war cabinet met on Monday to decide on the next phase of Israel’s war on Gaza. The meeting was reportedly to choose between ending the war in favor of ceasefire talks or expanding it to reoccupy the entire Strip. According to initial unconfirmed reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has briefed “friendly journalists” that he has ordered the Israeli army to “conquer Gaza” in the face of opposition from the army’s Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir. Netanyahu’s office reportedly told N12: “The decision has been made — Israel is going to conquer the Gaza Strip.”
Deporting Immigrants Kills Native Jobs Too
As Trump and his ICE Sturmabteilung troop stormingly about the country deporting people, there’s an important fact that’s being overlooked: deporting undocumented workers destroys domestic jobs as well. Of course, their nativist campaign is grotesque and revolting in itself, and would be were no native-born bystanders injured by the expulsions. But we should be clear on what damage we’re doing to ourselves as well.
As Ben Zipperer shows in work for the Economic Policy Institute, almost as many native-born workers could lose their jobs as deported immigrants.
Food Prices And Stagnating Wages Weigh On US Residents
New economic data and surveys reveal growing financial anxiety among US nationals, who are grappling with rising food prices and slowing wage growth. Nearly seven months after Donald Trump returned to the White House, the promised “golden age” has not materialized for most, according to polls.
According to a recent Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey, the vast majority of US adults feel stressed about food costs. This concern is particularly acute for low-income US residents, among whom 64% say grocery prices are one of their top sources of stress.

Over a dozen former Israeli security officials issued a joint video statement on 3 August demanding an end to the war in Gaza and warning that Tel Aviv is on the brink of “defeat.” Former officials have also demanded that US President Donald Trump pressure Israel to end the genocidal campaign which has raged since October 2023 – in a separate letter accompanying the video and signed by 550 former security officials.
The video statement was made by 19 retired army chiefs, intelligence heads, Shin Bet and Mossad directors, and police commissioners.

On March 25, PEN America fired me for living up to their mission. This termination came only three days after I published an article in Mondoweiss titled “Why was I investigated for sharing an article critical of Zionism by the ‘free speech’ organization PEN America?,” three years into my tenure on the membership and National Engagement team. Nine months earlier, after I shared an article on unlearning Zionism to our internal listserv, PEN leadership sent my colleagues and me an email stating that workers could be terminated for discriminatory action.

Israeli ground troops have carried out multiple ground raids across southwestern Syria over the weekend, including overnight raids in the Quneitra Governorate overnight Saturday, which led to the capture of multiple “suspects” who have not been conclusively identified and appear to simply be local Syrians.
On Friday, Israeli troops attacked farmers near Jubata al-Khashab, first opening fire on them while they were actively farming their own land then confiscating a tractor in the area because the tractor was trying to haul away trees within the area which Israeli military bulldozers had recently knocked down. Three Syrians were captured in that incident.

The image is forever seared in my mind: Francisco was two years old, his thin legs and swollen feet were covered in sores. Straw blond hair stuck to his head as he listlessly nursed from his teenage mother’s breast. He weighed 13 ½ pounds.
It was the summer of 1999, and I was weighing babies in Nueva Vida. I’d come to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch to help in any way I could through the Jubilee House Community and its project in Nicaragua, the Center for Development in Central America (JHC-CDCA).
With its main office located just a mile down the road from the largest Hurricane Mitch resettlement camp in the country, the folks at the JHC-CDCA were busy.

The Cuban revolution endures despite more than 60 years of U.S. attacks. One system exploits the people, while the other prioritizes their needs. Which nation deserves the label of “failed’?
In an age where propaganda masquerades as truth and empire cloaks itself in the garb of “democracy,” few lies are as pervasive—or politically useful—as the assertion that Cuba is a failed state. This accusation, deployed with relentless regularity by U.S. officials, corporate media, and neoliberal ideologues, is meant to delegitimize a revolutionary and socialist project that has refused to bow before empire.

In 2016, Larry Fink, CEO of investment firm BlackRock, had no doubts about the importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG): “Over the long term, ESG issues – ranging from climate change to diversity to board effectiveness – have real and quantifiable financial impacts”, he wrote in a letter on corporate governance in 2016.
The CEO of the world’s largest asset-management company has since changed his mind: “The reason I backed away from using the term ESG is that it means something different to everyone. It’s so undefined that it’s become unmentionable”, Fink said in 2023, as a guest on the Wall Street Journal podcast “Free Expression”.

An investigative report has uncovered an intensifying intimidation campaign targeting British ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, revealing extraordinary details of threats and warnings aimed at forcing him to drop the probe into Israeli war crimes in Gaza.
The report published by the Middle East Eye (MEE) on Friday revealed that Khan has been warned to withdraw arrest warrants for the Israeli regime’s leadership over the occupying entity’s genocidal war crimes in Gaza, or he and the top tribunal would be “destroyed.”
According to the report, the warning was delivered in May to Khan by Nicholas Kaufman, a British-Israeli defense lawyer linked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s adviser, during a meeting with Khan and his wife, Shyamala Alagendra, at a hotel in The Hague.
For Media, Trying To Help Gazans Survive Turns Heroes Into Zeroes

Last week, Smalls took on another Goliath. As part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, he tried to deliver life-saving aid—including food and baby formula—to the people of Gaza, who are suffering from a severe famine deliberately engineered by the Israeli government.
The Handala, the ship carrying the aid, was illegally seized in international waters by Israel’s military, and Smalls was singled out for violence, choked and kicked by Israeli soldiers, apparently because he’s Black. Past attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza have been dealt with even more harshly by Israel: In 2010, 57 activists aboard the aid ship Mavi Marmara were shot—nine of them killed—on their way to Gaza.

Our teachings remind us that every child is sacred, that land is not a possession but a living relative, and that dignity belongs to all peoples, no matter how far from our own homeland they may be. We have long followed a path of non-interference, respecting the sovereignty and self-determination of other nations. This is a principle that has allowed us to survive, to heal, and to remain rooted in our own identity.
Yet, there are moments in history when silence becomes too heavy to bear.
