I want to begin asking you about your idea of the “China model”. This is something you have been speaking about for many years, for almost 20 years now. For 75 years, it has provided crucial infrastructure support and sustained a population facing heavy repression at the behest of Israel. For the past 22 months, the organization has proved as important as ever in the midst of genocide. UNRWA and its facilities have provided schools, hospitals, cafeterias and more for Palestinians when no other help existed. Precisely because it is sometimes the sole entity continuing to keep Palestinians alive, Israel targets them and has killed 310 staff members in Gaza. US President Donald Trump is a very contradictory leader. He constantly implements policies that go against his stated goals. The perfect example of this is how Trump has treated BRICS, the Global South-led organization that now represents the majority of the planet. Trump sees BRICS as a major threat to US hegemony, and, in particular, the dominance of the US dollar as the global reserve currency. The US president has openly threatened members of BRICS to try to stop them from seeking alternatives to the dollar. In a press conference at the White House on July 8, Trump complained (emphasis added): BRICS was set up to hurt us. BRICS was set up to degenerate our dollar, and take our dollar as the standard, take it off as the standard.

On this episode of the MintCast, hosts Mnar Adley and Alan MacLeod speak with Ahmed Kaballo, the man behind the viral media outlet that the U.S. government has been trying to silence. In September, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a speech smearing media platform African Stream as secretly funded and controlled by Vladimir Putin himself. As Blinken said: According to the outlet’s website, ‘African Stream is’ – and I quote ‘a pan-African digital media organization based exclusively on social media platforms, focused on giving a voice to all Africans, both at home and abroad.’ In reality, the only voice it gives is to Kremlin propagandists.” Blinken provided no evidence to support these assertions. Yet, within hours, Silicon Valley reacted and crushed Kaballo’s organization. African Stream’s YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook pages were permanently deleted, while its Twitter account was demonetized.

Landlords are taking over society. For many average working people, it has become impossible to buy a house. And the cost of renting housing has become prohibitively expensive. This problem is especially bad in the United States. But it’s not only a problem in the US; it’s a problem in many countries around the world — especially in Western countries in North America and Europe, whose economies have become financialized. In the United States, for instance, the largest landlord is not an individual; it’s a massive Wall Street investment firm: Blackstone, the private equity fund. Blackstone owned more than 300,000 rental housing units in the US as of 2023. The number has only increased since then. Blackstone and other Wall Street investment funds have been gobbling up residential housing. Then they ratchet up the cost of rent, which has fueled homelessness, as many people are being evicted from their homes.

Known as the “Silent Holocaust,” the genocide in Guatemala is seldom mentioned in modern history. The United States, with support from Israel, backed yet another violent crusade against an indigenous population as well as against communism. The Guatemalan genocide — preceded by a CIA-instigated coup d’état of the Guatemalen government in 1954 and the ensuing civil war — saw hundreds of thousands of the Mayan Indigenous peoples and alleged communists massacred or disappeared. Jennifer Harbury, an attorney, author and human rights activist, witnessed the horrors of the genocidal campaign waged by the U.S.-backed Guatemalan military. Included in these horrors was the torture and disappearance of her husband, Mayan rebel leader Efraín Bámaca Velásquez (known as Everardo) by CIA-backed Guatemalan military officials.

But there’s still a problem, which is that the most powerful international organizations today are largely dominated by the United States and the Western powers. This includes institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the World Bank. These are organizations where the U.S. is the only country on Earth that has veto power.

The gutting of public funding for higher education in the United States has led to the takeover of universities by private donors, many of whom are Zionist entities and billionaires. As a result, universities have become, as guest Dr. Maura Finkelstein calls them, “banks and real estate development companies that offer classes.” As demonstrated by Finkelstein’s story, this new paradigm of higher education has pushed aside democratic values and academic freedom. In January 2024, as a result of a McCarthyist-style crackdown on pro-Palestinian faculty, Finkelstein was fired from her position as a tenured associate professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Muhlenberg College.

Following Donald Trump’s pledge to detain 3,000 undocumented immigrants per day, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have surged across the United States. California, home to an estimated 2.8 million undocumented immigrants as of 2023. has emerged as a primary target. Department of Homeland Security official Kristi Noem traveled to Los Angeles for a press conference, declaring the government’s intent to “bring in criminals that have been out on our street far too long.” But data tells a different story. According to ICE datasets analyzed by the Los Angeles Times, during the first 10 days of June, ICE arrested 722 undocumented immigrants in California.

Western corporate media coverage of the Global South-led organization BRICS is frequently dismissive and condescending. Bloomberg published an article claiming that BRICS is “little more than a meaningless acronym”. It appears that a lot of this criticism, nevertheless, is actually a coping mechanism, because evidence is piling up showing that the US government is very afraid of the rapid growth of BRICS. Donald Trump, in particular, is terrified of the possibility of BRICS challenging the global dominance of the US dollar. BRICS held a successful summit in Brazil in July, featuring for the first time the participation of 10 members and 10 partner countries. Trump responded with furious denunciation, threatening to hit all BRICS countries with 10% tariffs.
