The Sahel region, stretching between the Sahara and the savannas of Africa, is once again emerging as a battleground, not only of geography but of ideas, sovereignty, and neocolonial entrenchment. The formation of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) , uniting Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger into a confederation, marks a bold attempt to reclaim Pan-African agency and assert sovereignty free from foreign domination. Officially established on July 6, 2024, in Niamey, Niger, the AES reflects a transitional phase toward a unified federation, a development met with celebration across Africa and the Global South, but with growing alarm in Western capitals.

Afro-Indigenous Man To Receive Nearly $7 Million For Wrongful Conviction

Milwaukee, Wisconsin — On May 13, the Milwaukee Common Council approved a $6.96 million settlement for the wrongful conviction of an Afro-Indigenous man who spent 18 years in prison. Danny Wilber, an Oneida Nation of Wisconsin citizen, was convicted for first-degree intentional murder in Milwaukee County for an incident that occurred in Jan. 2004. The wrongful conviction settlement is the second largest in Milwaukee’s history, and is the result of a federal lawsuit against the City of Milwaukee and nine former Milwaukee police officers alleged to have violated Wilber’s constitutional rights. “The Milwaukee Police Department knew Danny Wilber was innocent—and they framed him anyway," said Lacey Kinnart, Wilber’s partner for more than a decade, in an interview with the LRI Native News Desk.

The mountain dominates the western coast of New Zealand’s North Island, also known as Aotearoa. Its peak is like the center point of a sundial, the shadows on its slopes telling time. The cloud formations drift in and out, shaping the weather. There are several Māori stories related to the creation of Aotearoa’s geography. One tells of four mountain warriors who lived in the interior of the North Island: Tongariro, Taranaki, Tauhara, and Pūtauaki. Two of them, Tongariro and Taranaki, were in love with a maiden mountain, Pīhanga, and they fought a mighty battle over her affections. Taranaki was defeated, and in shame and sadness, he left the center of the island.

New Jersey’s newest immigrant detention center, Delaney Hall, sits deep in the arteries of Newark, where shipping containers are stacked on top of each other in every direction. The air smells like sewage and the roads surrounding the center are constantly filled with truckers driving around. None of this has deterred activists from holding daily vigils outside of Delaney Hall. These actions, organized by a seasoned coalition of pro-immigrant rights groups in the state, have now been going for over a month. By now, the existence of Delaney Hall has become national news following the high-profile arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

On the surface, the pro-immigrant activists who took to the streets in Connecticut last month looked like every other recent march against Trump’s deportation machine: a multiracial crowd of all ages carrying witty signs and chanting. Their target was the commercial airline Avelo, which has proposed operating as an ICE subcontractor to carry out deportation flights. What made this protest different, however, is what happened next: The group New Haven Immigrants Coalition and its allies went beyond protesting to directly attacking Avelo’s key “pillars of support” in Connecticut. Like any public company, Avelo is effectively a Jenga tower — if several key pillars upholding the company are removed, the tower falls.

Los Angeles Passes United State’s Highest Minimum Wage

The Los Angeles City Council this month passed a law requiring hotel staff and airport catering industry workers be paid at least $30 per hour and given comprehensive health benefits by July 1, 2028. The minimum wage will be raised to $22.50 this year and increase by $2.50 each July for the next three years. This is a huge victory for UNITE HERE Local 11, the union that campaigned for the legislation, and represents the highest minimum wage in the country. (California’s statewide minimum is currently set at $16.50, and the highest minimum wage in the country currently is in D.C., with a $17.50 floor.)

The Anti-Fascist Women’s Front (AFŽ) as an organisation formed in the Second World War enabled women at that time to have their say in an organised way and for that voice to be heard. They needed women so badly that they could promise them everything they needed. That organisation is the foundation of everything that emerged in socialism. But it wasn’t so simple or quick. The AFŽ was disbanded in 1954 mainly because Vida Tomšič, who was leading the organisation at the time, judged that women had become too closed off in their organisation and therefore could not achieve anything that was really important, while at the same time high politics was doing its own thing and there were no women there.

16 months of brutal genocide and siege have done all but break the Palestinian resistance, which has steadfastly – if not miraculously – fended off and broken the ruthless siege of the Zionist entity. As an official death toll stands at 61,700 – with much more accurate estimates tallying the martyrs at over 300,000, “Israel” has yet again turned to slaughtering civilians. The Palestinian resistance has recruited at least 30,000 new fighters in Gaza, according to conservative estimates earlier this year. Three-quarters of the Resistance’s tunnels remain and the ambushing and fighting both Al-Qassam and Saraya al-Quds continue against an occupation that has mostly withdrawn its ground occupying troops in Gaza while mulling over sending robots into Gaza.

Wars and negotiations are carried out based on the interests and directives of the respective central governments. Both Indian and Pakistani citizens are worried about a full-scale conflict, and the wounds of numerous wars are deeply felt at the local level. Recently, the population has been traumatized by Operation Sindoor and its subsequent retaliation. This research aims to promote peace by placing the people at the forefront, educating them about peace, and exerting pressure from the grassroots level up to the provincial and national levels to restore peace, unity, coexistence, security, and prosperity. The objectives are to promote positive peace between the two nations by empowering local people, fostering connections between them, and sharing the findings with interested parties.

After spending a month in revolutionary Cuba, I was welcomed back to the Great Satan by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) detaining me, interrogating me, and seizing my phone in Miami International Airport on 19 May 2025. Every step of the way both to and from Cuba, I experienced endless harassment, secondary screenings, and physical groping by Transportation Security Administration (TSA). All of this indicates to me that I am on some sort of domestic terrorism watch list, as a result of my anti-imperialist political activity and my criminal record for taking direct action to resist the amerikan-zionist genocide against Palestine. For context, I am 20 years old.

In March, Greenpeace organizers and supporters found themselves waiting for a jury verdict in a North Dakota courthouse. Knowing the decision in this civil court case could force the organization to pay hundreds of millions in damages, many found themselves wondering how things had reached this point. “We were still asking, why are we even in this courtroom?” said Madison Carter, a spokesperson for Greenpeace USA. Pipeline builder Energy Transfer launched the lawsuit in 2019 against Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International, but its allegations — of defamation, false statements to banks, and aiding and abetting property damage — stemmed from the 2016 mass protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline at Standing Rock. Greenpeace flatly denies all the charges.

State and local governments have begun taking concrete steps towards a clean energy economy, and for now, even under Trump, green union jobs are increasing. Meanwhile, unions have partnered with climate activists to win legislation for more such jobs. Six states have passed “climate jobs” bills to expand renewable energy and raise labor standards for that construction. Four more have union coalitions advocating for such legislation. Will the green surge continue? And if it does, will workers reap the economic benefits—or get left behind? The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act opened the door for clean energy projects across the country. Many IRA tax credits were designed to encourage the use of high-wage union labor.

Most of the milestones of Anay Herrera’s adult life have taken place within walking distance of the apartment complex in Chicago’s Buena Park neighborhood where she’s lived for more than two decades. All five of her children were born at a nearby hospital and attended the elementary school down the street, where her two youngest, twins, are now in kindergarten. She took computer and GED classes at the local community college and now works part-time as a cashier at a restaurant a few blocks away. She’s come to know almost all of her neighbors, some of whose children have grown up with hers, and invites them over for homemade pozole and tinga.

Once a year, activists from Belgium join a solidarity trip to Palestine at the invitation of Viva Salud, bringing students, trade unionists, and movement organizers to the occupied territories to witness the impacts of the Israeli occupation firsthand. This year, half a dozen activists spent a week in the West Bank, learning from local organizations and observing how the situation has further deteriorated since October 7, 2023. “In Jerusalem, for example, you can no longer find the word ‘Palestine,’” one of the activists, Victor, told Peoples Dispatch. Two years ago, during a previous visit, shops sold souvenirs such as tote bags, postcards, and “Visit Palestine” posters. “I went to all the same tourist stores, and not a single one had them anymore,” they said.
