There are few things more important than our homes. Alongside providing our shelter, homes are where we make memories with friends and family — where bonds are formed and strengthened. Unfortunately, the right to a home in America is under threat. Rents have skyrocketed, homelessness is rising, and home ownership is increasingly unattainable for most Americans. There are multiple causes, but one culprit stands out: classic Wall Street greed. Massive private equity corporations and hedge funds are buying up homes by the thousands — houses, apartment buildings, and mobile home parks alike — and then jacking up rents. This trend accelerated after the 2008 financial crisis, when investment firms snatched up homes in foreclosure and began renting them to the growing number of people locked out of ownership.

For Gayle Pezzo, it started with the snowplows. In the fall of 2018, following a winter distinguished by the biggest snowfall in years, the town of Colchester, Vt., stopped plowing the nearly five miles of roads that snake through Westbury Mobile Home Park, where Pezzo, 72, lives. She and her neighbors were furious that the local government could simply withdraw its services and leave the park in the lurch. According to the Colchester Selectboard, the town’s five-member governing body, clearing Westbury’s roads was not the responsibility of public plows. They had decided that Westbury was a private residence — in effect, one with a long, rambling driveway that happened to shelter 250 working-class Vermont families.

On 12 August, Samar Abu Elouf, who won the 2025 World Press Photo of the Year for the picture above, posted on her Instagram account that her son’s close friend Sami Shukour had been killed while he ‘went to look for flour to feed himself and his family’. Samar had taken Sami’s graduation photographs just before the genocide began in October 2023. Sami’s family owns one of the most famous companies in Palestine, which made halawa with tahini. ‘Among the best in Gaza’, Samar wrote. Sami, she added, ‘was killed under a hail of bullets; the sound was very terrifying… We are not just numbers; each one of us is a story’. We have now entered the last quarter of 2025, the days galloping rapidly toward another year.

The story they sell is that “order” was built by reasoned men in sensible suits. The story we live is different. Multipolarity did not grow out of seminars or summits; it is the aftershock of five centuries of plunder, the recoil from wars and sanctions, and the refusal of the colonized to keep paying for someone else’s civilization. Its genealogy runs from the Bandung Communiqué (1955)—the first great gathering where the majority of humanity spoke in its own name—through the long detour of debt, structural adjustment, and counter-insurgency masquerading as “development.” Bandung’s promise was simple and subversive: sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and a say in the world economy for those who actually make the world economy run.

Advocates Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant say health communism isn’t about tweaking the current healthcare system but ending a system in which only those deemed “productive” or “deserving” are allowed to live well. Instead, care should be guaranteed to all — because we exist, not because we work. Under capitalism, care is often tied to productivity. But as Adler-Bolton and Vierkant argue in their book, Health Communism, that logic is the problem. Sickness, disability and aging aren’t anomalies; they’re part of being human. A truly humane health system, then, would not treat nonproductivity as a defect. Under the current system, many people — especially the chronically ill, disabled, elderly and institutionalized — are treated as “surplus populations,” expensive burdens to be managed. Health communism sees their liberation as central to the fight for justice.

The famous quote by Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci seems to have been written for the moment humanity is currently experiencing: “The old is dying, and the new cannot be born. In this interregnum, monsters arise.” The world is going through a civilizational crisis in which the neoliberal capitalist order, although mortally wounded, continues to impose its predatory logic, that of the use of force and the resurgence of fascism, while emancipatory alternatives fail to consolidate. In this vacuum, monsters proliferate: wars and attempts at recolonization, climate crisis, structural hunger, collapse of multilateralism and international law placed at the service of the world’s powers that be.

Michael A. McCarthy’s The Master’s Tools is about the power that finance exerts over people. He inquires into the problem and how it could realistically be solved: Why has finance capitalism left people worse off and further wrecked democracy along the way? Why does the financial sector increasingly determine our lives and politics… ? [H]ow might an alternative to investment for profit leave people better off, reinvigorate the demos, and rebuild democracy? (xii) When I started reading the book I thought maybe McCarthy’s response to these questions could be better reviewed by someone whose work is directly related to them. Still it seemed like an excellent resource for someone who is seeking to learn about the subject. It soon became apparent that the point of his book — ‘democratizing finance’ (9) — calls for responses from outsiders to the author’s field.

Landlords are taking over society. For many average working people, it has become impossible to buy a house. And the cost of renting housing has become prohibitively expensive. This problem is especially bad in the United States. But it’s not only a problem in the US; it’s a problem in many countries around the world — especially in Western countries in North America and Europe, whose economies have become financialized. In the United States, for instance, the largest landlord is not an individual; it’s a massive Wall Street investment firm: Blackstone, the private equity fund. Blackstone owned more than 300,000 rental housing units in the US as of 2023. The number has only increased since then. Blackstone and other Wall Street investment funds have been gobbling up residential housing. Then they ratchet up the cost of rent, which has fueled homelessness, as many people are being evicted from their homes.

In 1957, Mao Zedong oversaw the publication of Socialist Upsurge in China’s Countryside, a three-volume collection of articles compiled by the Communist Party of China for the political education of the peasantry. The following year, selections from these volumes were republished in abridged and regional editions. One such edition included a report from the Anyang Regional Communist Party Committee’s Office for the Co-operative Movement with an introduction by Mao. The text, called ‘Who Says a Chicken Feather Can’t Fly up to Heaven?’, provides the title for this newsletter.

The recent unilateral strikes by the United States on Iran’s nuclear development sites underline the fact that multilateralism is dead, and has been so for some time. The key institutions of Western-led globalization are no longer functioning or are in sleep mode. This was underlined by the U.S. government’s decision to boycott both the Finance and Development Summit in Seville, Spain, this week, and the Bonn Climate Summit two weeks earlier. The World Trade Organization has never recovered from the collapse of the Fifth Ministerial in Cancun in 2003, with the United States, in fact, taking the lead in emasculating it by preventing appointments to its decisive unit, the appellate court.

“If capitalism doesn’t resolve the crisis, people might remember socialism,” reflected Gyula Thürmer of the Hungarian Workers’ Party during a discussion on the far right in Europe. He was speaking at the Fascism Back in Europe? conference, organized by the Zetkin Forum in Berlin from June 20-22. His comment encapsulated one of the lingering themes of the conference: how the economic crisis, corporate domination, and historical revisionism are fueling the rise of authoritarian and far-right forces across both Eastern and Western Europe. In addition to Thürmer, speakers at the conference such as Vladimir Bortun, Jelena Đureinović, and Florian Nowicki traced how decades of austerity, deindustrialization, and the dominance of international capital have devastated working-class communities in Eastern Europe, creating fertile ground for nationalist, authoritarian politics.
