The Power of Conscience: US Military & The Myth Of Violence

By Maria Santelli in Other Worlds Are Possible - In our work at the Center on Conscience & War, this is proven to us daily, through our individual conscientious objectors. Science has proven it, too. This tendency for cooperation over competition is evident in daily life: on an average day, most people will witness countless acts of cooperation, kindness, and humanity towards one another, and not one act of violence or competition. And most of it is so commonplace, we barely even notice it. We take our nonviolence for granted. And so does the news. What makes the news is violence, not cooperation. Particularly, on our local news programs, the top stories are the ones that depict street crimes and “home invasions.”

Newsletter: Peace Defeats War

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers - This week we learned that there is enough opposition to war in the United States that diplomacy can defeat war. When the Senate voted to derail a deal to stop war with Iran over nuclear weapons, it was a major victory for the peace movement, but it is an opportunity for much more. To achieve the potential we now know we have begins with facing the reality of current US foreign policy. The truth is shrouded by politicians of both parties who believe in “American exceptionalism. The United States has a deep and broad war culture. Every town has a war memorial. There are multiple holidays that honor war and soldiers. The media puts forward the war culture view interviewing former military leaders, most of who are now in the weapons industry. It is the job of the peace movement to challenge the war culture.

Iran Deal: Diplomacy Defeats War

By Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance - In a major victory for diplomacy, peace the Senate by a vote of 58-42 blocked efforts to derail the nuclear agreement between Iran, the United States and five other nations. Democratic and independent senators who supported the deal prevented the Republicans from reaching the 60-vote threshold to advance H.J.Res. 61, a resolution of disapproval on the Iran deal. While the Republicans are scheduling additional votes there is no doubt there are sufficient votes to ensure the landmark nuclear deal, which will prevent a nuclear weapons program in Iran for at least a decade and lift economic sanctions on Iran, will take effect. While rhetoric among bi-partisans in Washington, DC painted a picture of Iran pursuing nuclear weapons, that was a false picture as even US intelligence agencies have acknowledged there is no nuclear weapons program in Iran. In the end the diplomacy won.

Week Of Action To Stop Arms Sales Launched With Blockade!

By Stop The Arms Fair - The week of action against the DSEI arms fair got off to an exciting start today, with the road entrances to the ExCeL Centre blockaded in acts of creative protest. Activists stopped a military vehicle from entering the site of the arms fair, and held the road for hours with ‘Stop Arming Israel’ banners and chants. There were talks about the UK-Israeli arms trade and the Israeli companies that will be exhibiting at DSEI; and moving testimonies by people in Gaza who have experienced the effect of these deadly weapons were read out. There was a beautiful moment when over 50 people took part in a Dabkeh dance rehearsal while continuing to block the road. Activists had set up a ‘Pavilion of Shame’ spoofing the Israeli pavilion which will be at the arms fair next week. The Pavilion displayed model weapons and quotes about the ‘battle-tested’ weapons. Alongside the Pavilion of Shame was a Pavilion of Remembrance, which celebrated Palestinian culture and was decorated with a quilt remembering the victims of drone attacks.

Activists Want The U.S. Institute Of Peace To Favor Peace

By David Swanson in TeleSur - The World may be shocked to learn United States government has an Institute of Peace; Orwell would not have been. Gallup polling finds that much of the world believes the U.S. government to be the greatest threat to peace on earth. It comes as a surprise to many that the U.S. government maintains and funds something called the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) which operates out of a shiny new building near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., a building with a curved roof clearly meant to resemble a dove and yet somehow more closely resembling a giant brassiere. George Orwell, had he lived to see USIP, might have been less surprised than most. In fact, USIP was created by a law signed by President Ronald Reagan in the year 1984, the year for which Orwell had named his dystopian novel back in 1948, when the U.S. Department of War had just been renamed the Department of Defense, and its mission of offensive war-making had been clearly announced to observers fluent in doublespeak.

Airline Drops Pianist From Entertainment Over Controversial Tweets

By Brian Wise in New Cold War - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has dropped a recording of the pianist Valentina Lisitsa from its in-flight entertainment system after receiving complaints about her Twitter commentary on the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Lisitsa, an ethnic Russian born in Ukraine who now lives in Paris, has drawn attention in recent months for her polarizing social media commentary about the conflict in Ukraine. She has compared President Petro Poroshenko’s government to Nazi Germany; her tweets about Ukrainians have been criticized as vulgar and offensive. Lisitsa maintains that her remarks have been misconstrued and are intended as satire. On Sunday, a Canadian-Ukrainian who identifies herself as Inna Thorn [an assumed name] wrote an e-mail to KLM stating she was “appalled to see Valentina Lisitsa being featured” in the Dutch airline’s in-flight entertainment system, which she spotted during a trip from Kiev to Calgary.

Tell U.S. Institute Of Peace To Work For Peace

By World Beyond War - If you’ve never heard of the U.S. Institute of Peace, please keep reading. It works everyday with your money in a fancy new building next to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. It just doesn’t work for peace. If you know the USIP’s record and consider it a lost cause, please keep reading. This institute can be made to do some good. A number of us will be meeting with USIP in late September and bringing along this petition. Please click here to sign it. The petition to USIP reads: “We urge you to oppose U.S. militarism and begin working for an end to U.S. war-making by providing to Congress and the public information on the disastrous results of recent U.S. wars and the superior results of nonviolence and diplomacy. We ask that you recommend to the President of the United States the removal from your board of Stephen Hadley, Eric Edelman, and Frederick M. Padilla, and their replacement by three seasoned peace activists, along with a recommendation to maintain at least three seasoned peace activists on your board at all times — right now there are none.”

Newsletter – Black August, End Neo-Slavery, Resist

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance - Black August is coming to an end as we commemorate the ten year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. As many head back to school, a full season of actions are being planned for the fall to stop the corporate takeover of our communities and world and the push toward neo-slavery. There is a lot of resistance going on. We hope that you have an opportunity this summer to relax and build up your energy for the many actions that are being planned for the fall. If you go to a park, there is one more thing you can do: take a moment to think about the people who inhabited the land before it became a park.

Over 220 Nonviolent Actions Planned For Nonviolence Week

By Staff of Campaign Nonviolence - Campaign Nonviolence is a long-term movement to mainstream nonviolence and build a culture of peace in three interrelated ways: practicing nonviolence toward ourselves, toward all others, and toward the world by working to abolish war, end poverty, reverse the climate crisis, and challenge all violence. In cities and towns in all 50 states, Campaign Nonviolence will march against violence and for a world of peace, justice and sustainability. During Campaign Nonviolence Week, we will connect the dots between war, poverty, climate change, and all forms of violence —and join forces to work for a culture of peace.

Let It Shine

By Kathy Kelly in Information Clearing House - Walking through small cities and towns in Wisconsin, participants distributed leaflets and held teach-ins encouraging people to demand accountability from local police, and an end to the “Shadow Drone” program operated by the U.S. Air National Guard out of Wisconsin’s own Volk Field. Our friend Maya Evans traveled the furthest to join the walk: she coordinates Voices for Creative Nonviolence in the UK. Alice Gerard, from Grand Isle, NY, is our most consistent long-distance traveler, on her sixth antiwar walk with VCNV. Brian Terrell noted what mothers speaking to Code Pink, as part of the Mothers Against Police Brutality campaign, had also noted: that surprisingly many of the officers charged with killing their children were veterans of the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Hundreds Of Protests Call For No War With Iran

By Staff for Popular Resistance - As the Senate moves within five votes to ensure the Iran nuclear agreement becomes reality, hundreds of protests were held across the country calling on elected officials to support the Iran nuclear deal rallying for no war with Iran. The coordinated mobilizations come at a key moment as Congress nears the end of the August recess. Tens of thousands of petitions were also submitted to members of Congress. Lawmakers will vote on the pact—potentially as soon as September 9. You can take action now to call your elected representatives to urge them to choose the path to peace by supporting the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and world powers. Take action here. The war hawks are spending millions of dollars to generate opposition to the agreement but the people are out organizing and are getting very close to victory. So, take action today.

‘The Iranian Threat’: Who Poses Gravest Danger To World Peace?

By Noam Chomsky in TruthDig - Throughout the world there is great relief and optimism about the nuclear deal reached in Vienna between Iran and the P5+1 nations, the five veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany. Most of the world apparently shares the assessment of the U.S. Arms Control Association that “the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action establishes a strong and effective formula for blocking all of the pathways by which Iran could acquire material for nuclear weapons for more than a generation and a verification system to promptly detect and deter possible efforts by Iran to covertly pursue nuclear weapons that will last indefinitely.” There are, however, striking exceptions to the general enthusiasm: the United States and its closest regional allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

4 False Claims About Iran Deal

By Daniel Angster in Media Matters - Nuclear Deal Lifts U.S. Economic Sanctions On Iran In Exchange For Guarantee Of Verifiable Peaceful Nuclear Program. President Obama and the leaders of world powers England, France, Russia, China, and Germany reached a landmark nuclear agreement with Iran that "lifts economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for guarantees that its nuclear energy program remains peaceful." The New York Times reported that the agreement includes a "snapback mechanism to renew United Nations sanctions" in the event that Iran is perceived as violating the deal that "allows the full raft of penalties to resume automatically": The agreement lifts economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for guarantees that its nuclear energy program remains peaceful.

Nobel Peace Laureates Oppose Torture, Perpetuate Myths

By Robert J. Burrowes of Flame Tree Prtoject. In a recent letter to US President Barack Obama twelve Nobel Peace laureates declared their support for the long history of US elite violence against Native Americans and enslaved Africans, as well as the US imperial violence around the world that has butchered tens of millions of people over the past 200 years. See 'US: An End to Torture: Twelve Nobel Peace Prize laureates write to President Barack Obama asking the US to close the dark chapter on torture once and for all. Obama responds'. The letter, the response from Obama and a subsequent article written by Ramos-Horta – see 'Obama: The Courage to Say "We Were Wrong"' – were a stark reminder to those of us who struggle to end the violence in our world of what genuine peace activists are up against.

Mumia Abu-Jamal On The Meaning Of Ferguson

Before recent days, who among us had ever heard of Ferguson, Missouri? Because of what happened there, the brief but intense experience of state repression, its name will be transmitted by millions of Black mouths to millions of Black ears, and it will become a watchword for resistance, like Watts, like Newark, Harlem and Los Angeles. But Ferguson wasn't 60 years ago - it's today. And for young Blacks from Ferguson and beyond, it was a stark, vivid history lesson - and also a reality lesson. When they dared protest the state's street-murder of one of their own, the government responded with the tools and weapons of war. They assaulted them with gas. They attacked them as if Ferguson were Fallujah, in Iraq.
