BRICS Expands To 56% Of World Population, 44% Of Global GDP

The Global South-led organization BRICS continues to expand. While the United States and Israel were busy waging war on Iran in June, BRICS quietly announced that Vietnam had accepted the group’s invitation to join as a partner country. With the addition of Vietnam, the extended BRICS+ has 20 members and partners, as of July 2025. The 10 BRICS members are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The 10 BRICS partners are Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Despite The Pain In The World, Socialism Is Not A Distant Utopia

Every morning, I open the newspapers (now on apps rather than print) and read about atrocities taking place across the world. There is an inflation of pain, from the genocide in Gaza to the war in Sudan and the unreported chaotic violence in and around Myanmar. These conflicts seem interminable and might even confuse the casual observer who does not follow them closely. The current phase of Sudan’s war began in April 2023, with the Sudanese Armed Forces (led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan) arrayed against the Rapid Support Forces (led by Commander Mohamed ‘Hemedti’ Hamdan Dagalo).

Ballots And Bias: How The Press Framed Venezuela’s Elections.

The pro-government alliance achieved a sweeping victory in Venezuela’s May 25 elections, while a fractured opposition suffered losses. Western media distorted the results – spinning low turnout claims, ignoring the role of illegal US sanctions, and offering selective sympathy to elite opposition figures. At stake for the 54 contesting Venezuelan political parties were seats for 285 National Assembly deputies, 24 state governors, and 260 regional legislators. The pro-government coalition won all but one of the governorships, taking three of the four states previously held by the opposition. The loss of the state of Barinas was particularly symbolic for this was the birthplace of former President Hugo Chávez; and especially so, because the winner was Adán Chávez, the late president’s older brother.

Communist-Led Kerala Is Eradicating Extreme Poverty

In a region too often consumed by the drums of war, particularly between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, the importance of a sustained ceasefire cannot be overstated. While military skirmishes and nationalistic posturing capture headlines, they divert critical attention and resources from the real battles against poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and public health crises. A nation’s greatness lies not in its arsenal but in the well-being of its people. The ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan in May 2025 offers an opportunity to reimagine national priorities, shifting focus from border conflicts to building equitable and just societies.

Socialist Women In Texas Vow To Take On Abortion Bans

Dozens of Texans packed into a Methodist church in San Antonio, Texas for the “Women’s Socialism Conference,” organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The gathering was the first of its kind in Texas. Attendees traveled to San Antonio from across the state and the country to talk about the issues that women face in Texas and how socialist ideas and policies could be a solution. According to Destiney Peña, an organizer with the PSL in San Antonio, the conference challenges the narrative that Texas is a “lost cause” politically, or a “state full of Trump supporters,” rather than a state with a diverse range of political opinions.

Whole Process People’s Democracy: The Path Forward

China’s political form is called ‘Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.' Chinese scholar Zhang Weiwei calls the Chinese political content ‘whole-process people’s democracy’. He distinguishes this model from the formulaic, procedure-obsessed, and anti-democratic model of the North American Republic and European social democracies. What separates the Chinese model from the political model of the central capitalist formations are a number of variables: firstly, mass participation from top to bottom is a key feature of Chinese socialism. Secondly, the subordination of the capitalist class to the party-state and thus the imperatives of the masses defines China’s ability to develop a socialist market economy.

We Must Adhere To The People-Centered Development Philosophy

During the New Democratic Revolution, the Chinese trade unions united and mobilised the broad masses of workers to bravely throw themselves into the revolutionary torrent against imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucratic capitalism with a fearless revolutionary spirit. They fought bravely and made important contributions to achieving national independence and people’s liberation and establishing the new China. During the period of socialist revolution and construction, the Chinese trade unions united and mobilised the broad masses of workers to actively participate in the construction of New China with a sense of ownership and passion, worked hard and built enterprises with arduous efforts, and sang the strong voice of the times that “we workers are powerful”.

Behind Trump’s Wishful Thinking On ‘Reindustrialization’

In the 1950s, when Japan and much of Europe was in ruins, the U.S. accounted for 50% of the world’s global production. By the 1960s, this was 35%, declining to 25% by the 1980s. By 2025, the U.S. share of global production had fallen to 12% as production grew elsewhere. (itif.org, Feb. 18) The capitalist class in the U.S. has grown frantic about this reversal. Its focus is on China, and it blames China for its spectacular level of modern industrial development. In advanced technology manufacturing the future is clear: China holds 45% of the global share to 11% for the U.S. Higher levels of production need a high-tech infrastructure to move what is produced to global markets.

NATO Was Founded To Crush Communist, Socialist, And Anti-Colonial Movements

Medea Benjamin and David Swanson explain NATO’s supremely violent history in NATO: What You Need to Know. The organization was born on April 4, 1949, when foreign ministers from 12 nations came together in Washington, D.C. to sign the 1100-page North Atlantic Treaty. Its original members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The treaty proclaimed its commitment to peace and the principles of the UN Charter, but “the real glue that brought NATO countries together was opposition to communism and socialism.”

Our Future Is Not Determined By The US Or Europe

“Debating the resources of the Global South is becoming urgent, but it is even more urgent to discuss how it is that most of the resources for the production of technology and goods are from the Global South and yet it is the North that takes all the wealth,” Cassia Bechara began her presentation, adding: ”in 2024 the wealth of the world’s richest millionaires was the greatest in history.” Although the speakers focused on the Global South in their presentations, they expressed different views on the same topic, as in the case of Márcio Pochmann, President of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

International Conference On Perspectives For Building Sovereign, Socialist Economic Policies

Renowned economists, sociologists, and movement leaders from Mexico, Russia, Benin, China, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Argentina, and more, will come together in São Paulo, Brazil from April 7-11 to participate in the IV International Dilemmas of Humanity Conference: Perspectives for Social Transformation. The conference is being organized by the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST), the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, and the International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA). It follows the III International Dilemmas of Humanity Conference which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in October 2023.

Make The World Scared Again: US Threatens United Nations Agencies

“Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” was the key question at the U.S. House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings during the 1950s McCarthy era. At the height of the anti-Soviet/Communist fear, HUAC cost thousands of people their jobs and created a powerful chill to freedom of speech and association. A similar chill with global consequences has now come to 2000 U.N. agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive U.S. funding. An Office of Management and Budget questionnaire asks them to describe with whom and how they do business. It has created stupor and confusion here in Geneva as they ponder how to reply.

Nicaragua Ranks Highest In Gender Equity In The Americas

If you asked 100 people in the U.S. or the U.K. to name the country leading gender equity in the Americas, it’s unlikely anyone would correctly answer Nicaragua. This lack of awareness reflects the success of a decades-long imperialist campaign to discredit and undermine Nicaragua’s remarkable achievements since the 1979 revolution. The U.S has continuously attempted to destroy the Sandinista revolution, from the contra wars, through active support for the 16 years of neo-liberal government, to the 2018 attempted coup, and the current punitive economic sanctions.

25 Days Of Debt-Service Payments Could Emancipate African Women From 40 Billion Hours Of Water Harvesting

March is the month of International Working Women’s Day, a day deeply rooted in the socialist movement. Most of the world now only calls 8 March ‘International Women’s Day’, excluding the word ‘working’ from its title. But work is a fundamental part of women’s daily lives. According to UN Women’s annual report Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2024, 63.3% of women worldwide participated in the labour force in 2022. However, due to the appalling state of social protections and labour regimes, by 2024 nearly 10% of women were living in extreme poverty.

Cuba Sends Doctors, The United States Sends Sanctions

On February 25, US secretary of state Marco Rubio announced restrictions on visas for both government officials in Cuba and any others worldwide who are “complicit” with the island nation’s overseas medical-assistance programs. A US State Department statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.” This action, the seventh measure targeting Cuba in one month, has international consequences; for decades tens of thousands of Cuban medical professionals have been posted in around sixty countries, far more than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) workforce, mostly working in under- or unserved populations in the Global South.
