Take Action Now

This week we urge you to take action in three areas. First, everyone should come out for antiwar actions as the Trump administration and Pentagon, with the silent acquiescence of congressional Democrats are escalating the war in Syria. At the same time the occupiers of Palestine, Israel , continue to murder nonviolent protesters. And, the Trump administration has put in place a war cabinet with a record military budget. Second, we urge you to help us stop the Trans Pacific Partnership. We need to reawaken the movement of movements that stopped President Obama to now stop President Trump. We have a lot of power in an election year and every elected official should be speaking out against the TPP. Finally, Health Over Profit for Everyone, our single payer campaign, finished its first action camp with a protest at Senator Sanders' office. We urge you to join us in urging Sanders to introduce an improved Medicare for all bill in the 2019 legislative session.

Role Of Youth In The Coming Transformation

The eruption of youth protests over gun violence in schools and other issues is another indicator that the 2020s could be a decade of transformation where people demand economic, racial and environmental justice as well as peace. Students who are in their teens now will be in their twenties then. They will have experience in how protests can change political culture. Some view the youth awakening in these protests as reminiscent of youth movements in previous generations, others are less optimistic. We cannot predict the role this generation will play, but throughout the history of mass movements, youth have been a key factor by pushing boundaries and demanding change.

Teachers’ Courage Is Contagious

At the roots of the teacher's strikes and protests are neo-liberal policies. Education has become a profit center, which is driving more testing so that companies can sell testing software and other materials whether or not the tests actually have educational value. Many argue that the tests drive teachers to narrow their focus to the content of the tests and test-taking skills and that weeks of testing take significant amounts of time away from education. Companies are also selling new metrics to analyze and document everything about students from their cognitive to their emotional abilities. Educators are concerned about how this data will be used in the future to possibly restrict access to higher education and/or employment for students who may not perform well. Schools are also being privatized through charter schools, which can pick and choose their student population instead of providing education to all students.

US Doubles Down As Empire Declines

US empire is in decline. Reports of the end of the US being the unitary power in world affairs are common, as are predictions of the end of US empire. China surpassed the United States as the world economic leader, according to Purchasing Power Parity Gross National Product, and Russia announced new weapons that can overcome the US' defense systems. What is happening in the United States, in response, is to do more of what has been causing the decline. As the Pentagon outlined in its post-primacy report, the US' plan is more money, more aggression and more surveillance.

People Are Showing They’ve Had Enough

The growing wealth divide is generating a backlash, which will likely grow. As David F. Ruccio points out in the chart below, since the 1980s, the wealth gap between the top 1% and the bottom 90%, which was stable for several decades, has been widening at a fast pace. At the same time, the military budget has been growing, now consuming 57% of federal discretionary funding, leaving only 43% to meet our many needs for education, housing, transportation, protection of the planet and more.

Mass Mobilization Against Trump Military Parade

President Trump ordered the Pentagon to start planning a military parade on Veteran's Day this November. Trump wants to outdo the military parade he attended in France on Bastille Day. Estimates are it could cost up to $50 million. The last military parade was after the Gulf War in 1991. A coalition of groups is organizing to oppose the parade, click here to learn more.

Next Stage Of Net Neutrality Conflict Begins

On Thursday, the FCC's net neutrality rule was published in the Federal Register. This was the official start of the next phase of the campaign to protect the open Internet as a common carrier with equal access for all and without prejudice based on content (net neutrality). There are multiple fronts of struggle to make net neutrality a reality: Congress, the courts, states and communities. This is part of a campaign to create an Internet for the 21st Century that is fast, reliable and available in all communities. Polls show widespread support for net neutrality.

War Preparations Against Venezuela As Election Nears

Since we published "Regime Change Fails: Is a Military Coup or Invasion Next," we received more information showing steps toward preparing for a potential military attack on Venezuela. Stopping this war needs to become a top priority for the peace movement. Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) published a newsletter that reported "troubling news of an impending military assault on the sovereign nation of Venezuela by states and forces allied with the United States."

Understanding How Media Protects The Status Quo

Corporate media outlets in the United States represent the interests of the wealthy elites. They distract the public with meaningless tidbits such as what a celebrity said or did, rather than bringing attention to critical issues. As FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) frequently reports, in the off chance that the media does cover a movement, the coverage is generally biased against the movement. As a result, a useful tactic for getting attention is to go where the media are and present a clear visual message through giant banners and other techniques.

New Defense Strategy: War With Great Nations & Arms Race

This week, following the recent announcement of a new National Defense Strategy that focuses on conflicts with great powers and a new arms race, the Pentagon announced an escalation of nuclear weapons development. The United States' military is spread across the world, including several dangerous conflict areas that could develop into an all-out war, possibly in conflict with China or Russia. This comes at a time when US empire is fading, something the Pentagon also recognizes and the US is falling behind China economically.

Our Movements Are Greater Than Trump

More women are activated, and this is definitely a positive. The challenge is to move them to recognize the deep roots of the crises we face and how to organize in ways that support, rather than marginalize, women who are the most impacted by these root causes. Nicole Colson described positive signs that Women's March participants are developing a deeper political analysis. And, she urges radical organizers to participate in the planning and marches to build relationships with people and challenge conventional narratives.

Preparing For The Storm With A New Economy

Just as we must end the extraction of fossil fuels and minerals from the Earth to lessen the impacts of climate change and stop the poisoning of our communities, we must also end the extraction of wealth from our communities. A democratized economy, described in greater depth on It’s Our Economy, gives more control over and benefit from the economy to people and reduces the wealth divide. This week, we highlight work that is being done in the United States and other countries to transform economic institutions so they serve people and protect the planet.

No Foreign Bases: Challenging the Footprint of US Empire

The United States cannot be a moral or ethical country until it faces up to the realities of US empire

More Seeds For Transformation Planted This Week

The Trump Administration continues to plant more seeds for the coming era of transformation that we have written about in recent newsletters, Preparing for the Coming Age of Transformation and Ensuring Justice in the Coming Age of Transformation. It continues to put policies in place that go against national consensus on critical issues and is conducting a foreign policy that isolates the United States from the rest of the world. With each of these actions, the spring that will create the boomerang of transformation gets pushed down further. This week, we focus on three areas: allowing federal prosecution of marijuana offenses where states have made marijuana legal, allowing off shore oil exploration throughout US coastal areas, and escalating regime change efforts in Iran. Each of these actions creates the potential for a larger boomerang in favor economic, racial and environmental justice and peace.

Ensuring Justice In The Era Of Transformation

In our last article, we predicted that the 2020’s will be an era of transformation. We focused on the development of the movement since the “Take-Off” phase of the 2011 Occupy encampments, followed by Black Lives Matter, Fight for $15, Idle No More, carbon infrastructure protests, debt resistance, immigration protests and more. The 2020s will be a decade when the impacts of years of mismanagement of crisis situations, such as climate change, inequality and US militarism, become unavoidable requiring major transformations. What we do now to prepare will help determine the result.
