On Friday, October 18 at 6 am, 12 Penn Police officers and one Philadelphia Police officer raided the home of pro-Palestine Penn students organizers. After threatening to break down the door with a battering ram and pointing a gun at their neighbor, they stormed the house in full tactical gear. The police banged on each door as students were sleeping, pointing rifles and handguns at their heads as they exited their rooms with their hands raised. Officers refused to show a warrant to residents of the house, and refused to provide their names and badge numbers. While the students were corralled by police in a room, one student was separated and taken in for questioning.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called on the UN on 27 October to convene an urgent Security Council meeting in response to Israel's recent missile and drone attack on the Islamic Republic while affirming Iran's right to retaliate.
Araghchi issued a letter to the UN Secretary-General stating that the "Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the President of the Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to address these serious violations and illegal actions, ensuring that this regime is held accountable for its actions."
"While Iran's air defense system intercepted most of the missiles, four Iranian army officers bravely sacrificed their lives to protect the national security of their country and were martyred," Araghchi's letter stated.
Evo Morales Survives Armed Attack In Cochabamba
Former Bolivian president Evo Morales reported that he survived an armed attack and an alleged attempt at capture early this morning while traveling on the road connecting Villa Tunari with Shinahota, in the Cochabamba Tropics, an area considered his main political stronghold.
The attack comes amid a growing internal crisis in the Movement for Socialism (MAS), the party founded by Morales, which is currently facing divisions and power disputes among its various factions.
“The first vehicle was hit by at least four shots. In this situation, Evo Morales changed vehicle hastily, it was hit by 14 shots. In that last vehicle, the driver was hit by a shot that grazed his head and another hit him in the arm” says a statement published by Morales in X.

As media critics, we look to Palestinians to represent Palestinian views, but it’s crucial that we not see the present moment as something happening to other people somewhere else. The repression of simple anti-genocide calls, the censorship, the firings, the disinformation, the malforming of concepts like antisemitism—these are problems for all of us, about all of us, that will influence all of us forever.
Defending Rights & Dissent, online at RightsAndDissent.org, have started a project called the Gaza First Amendment Alert, which is going to come out every other Wednesday. Chip Gibbons is policy director at Defending Rights & Dissent. He’s a journalist, researcher and a longtime activist.

All eyes have quite rightly been on Palestine for the past year. Joe Biden’s maniacal pact with Israel has killed an estimated 200,000 people, and Israel is poised to ethnically cleanse northern Gaza and Lebanon. Their war crimes range from starvation, destruction of hospitals, shooting children in the head, rape and torture, attacking United Nations peacekeeping forces, assassinating Palestinian leaders, and burning hospital patients to death. All the atrocities have been documented, often by the perpetrators themselves, and have been defended vociferously. The genocide is a joint project with the U.S. and has more bipartisan support than any initiative which directly impacts people in this country.

Britain’s Home Office is making a “grave mistake” by ignoring a call from the Council of Europe to review its treatment of Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder’s wife has warned.
The council’s parliamentary assembly, of which the U.K. is a member, passed a resolution earlier this month designating Assange as a “political prisoner”.
Assange endured five years in Belmarsh maximum security prison in London before being released in June, and flying to his native Australia. The U.K. government had incarcerated him while the U.S. pursued extradition proceedings in the British courts.
His treatment has outraged the Council of Europe.

Iranian air defenses successfully confronted an Israeli attack on military targets near the capital of Tehran in the early hours of 26 October, semi-official Tasnim News reported.
The Air Defense Base issued a statement saying that “Iran’s air defenses intercepted and successfully confronted the acts of aggression” carried out Saturday by “the criminal, illegitimate and fake regime of Israel.”
The statement added that Israel sought to escalate tensions in the conflict by launching attacks on military sites in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam, resulting in only “limited damage.”
The Iranian army later issued a statement announcing that two soldiers were killed in the attack. The statement said they were “martyred during confrontation with the projectiles fired by the criminal Zionist regime."

On October 15, two American officials told the Associated Press that they “believed” the White House had gotten assurances from Israel that it would not strike Iran’s oil or nuclear facilities when it launched its eventual retaliation for the October 1 missile barrage that Iran had fired at Israel.
The officials’ cautious tone reflected their lack of confidence in Israel’s verbal agreements. Nothing was in writing, and Israel had made no public declaration about limiting its options regarding Iranian targets. Given Israel’s long history of defying and deceiving its credulous benefactor, it’s remarkable that it’s taken this long for Washington to display this kind of caution with Israel’s promises.
Media Hawks Make Case For War Against Iran

The media hawks are flying high, pushing out bellicose rhetoric on the op-ed pages that seems calculated to whip the public into a war-ready frenzy.
Just as they have done with Hezbollah (FAIR.org, 10/10/24), prominent conservative media opinionators misrepresent Iran as the aggressor against an Israel that practices admirable restraint.
Under the headline, “Iran Opens the Door to Retaliation,” the Wall Street Journal editorial board (10/1/24) wrote that Iran’s October 1 operation against Israel “warrants a response targeting Iran’s military and nuclear assets. This is Iran’s second missile barrage since April, and no country can let this become a new normal.”

Without greater action, the planet will warm as much as 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, according to the latest United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report: No more hot air … please!.
In the coming round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), countries must commit to slashing their collective yearly greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent by the end of the decade and by 57 percent by 2035, a press release from UNEP said.
Otherwise, the annual report says, the chance of meeting the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average will disappear within a few years.
Israel’s Genocide Day 384: Israel Ethnically Cleanses Northern Gaza
The Israeli army forcibly expelled Palestinians in northern Gaza from their shelters, as relayed by eyewitness accounts, news reports, and video footage released by Israeli sources.
On Wednesday, Israel’s Kan satellite channel aired video footage of Israeli military trucks transferring dozens of blindfolded Palestinian detainees. Kan claimed that the Palestinians were arrested “for interrogation.”
The Israeli army also released aerial video footage on Wednesday showing hundreds of Palestinians walking amid the rubble, surrounded by Israeli tanks as they all head in the same direction after being gathered in a destroyed square. The Israeli army reportedly said that it had “evacuated” 20,000 Palestinians from Jabalia.
War And The Constitution

Can the president fight any war he wishes? Can Congress fund any war it chooses? Are there constitutional and legal requirements that must first be met before war is waged?
These questions should be addressed in a national debate over the U.S. military involvement in Ukraine and Israel. Sadly, there has been no debate. The media are mouthing what the C.I.A. is telling them, Congress is in lock-step, and only a few websites and podcasts — my own, “Judging Freedom” on YouTube, among them — are challenging the government’s reckless, immoral, illegal and unconstitutional wars.

September 18, 1961, was a significant day in the struggle surrounding the African liberation movements aimed at ending colonialism on the continent.
United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and the entire crew and passengers aboard his plane went down in Ndola located in the then British colony of Northern Rhodesia, now known as Zambia.
Although the colonial authorities claimed that the crash and subsequent deaths were the result of “pilot error”, ever since this time questions have been raised over whether the crash was a deliberate act of sabotage designed to prevent a political solution to the crisis in the former Belgian Congo.

Philadelphia, PA – On October 16, over the objections of students, Temple University Beasley School of Law adopted anti-protest policies mandated by the American Bar Association. In the spring of 2024, the American Bar Association (ABA) adopted a mandate forcing all law schools to adopt policies designed to prevent the student protests that have taken place since October 7, 2023.
While the student movement has recently surged as a part of the broader pro-Palestine movement, law student protests that have raised concern from the ABA also include the pro-choice and LGBTQ rights activism following judicial attacks on women and LGBTQ people in the courts.
Ukraine: Zelenski Begs Russia To Renew Deals He Had Botched
The actor who has been playing the President of Ukraine for a while is getting cold feet. Winter is coming and the energy networks of Ukraine are near to the point of total breakdown.
There could have been agreements in place to prevent that. But the Ukrainian side had botched those deals. Now Zelenski is begging to renew them.
In late 2022 the Russian military launched a bombing campaign against electricity switching stations in Ukraine. A lot of transformers got blown up. The Ukrainian military responded by concentrating its air defenses near electricity stations.
