Dr. Soma Baroud was murdered on October 9 when Israeli warplanes bombed a taxi that carried her and other tired Gazans somewhere near the Bani Suhaila roundabout near Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip. I am still unable to understand whether she was on her way to the hospital, where she worked, or leaving the hospital to go home. Does it even matter?

The US government’s special envoy for West Asian humanitarian issues, Lise Grande, told the heads of over a dozen aid organizations that Washington “would not consider withholding weapons from Israel for blocking food and medicine from entering [Gaza],” according to informed sources who spoke with POLITICO. “She was sort of saying, with certain allies, we can’t play bad cop,” an aid official who attended the 29 August meeting said, adding that Grande made it clear Israel is part of a “tight circle of very few allies” that Washington “will not oppose, nor will it hold anything back that they want.”

United Nations experts have stated that there “are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide … has been met”, adding that “the genocide in Gaza is the most extreme stage of a long-standing settler colonial process of erasure of the native Palestinians”. Scientific experts have estimated that 186,000 Palestinians will die due to Israel’s war of extermination on Gaza, representing roughly 8% of the population of the densely populated strip.

Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 184 Palestinians since last Tuesday, October 8, according to the Gaza branch of the Palestinian Health Ministry. On Thursday alone, 54 Palestinians were killed in multiple strikes, according to the Ministry’s daily report. Israel’s siege of parts of northern Gaza entered its sixth day on Thursday, sealing off Beit Lahia and Jabalia as the Israeli army launched a military invasion of the area, which houses an estimated 200,000 people. Analysts have considered Israel’s current operations in northern Gaza to be the first step in implementing the vision laid out by retired Israeli general Giora Eiland in an article he published in the early months of the war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on 8 October called on the people of Lebanon to “free [their] country from Hezbollah,” threatening them with “destruction and suffering” if they refused to do so. “You have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza. It doesn’t have to be that way,” Netanyahu said as his country’s air force continued to launch non-stop raids across Lebanon. “We have degraded Hezbollah’s capabilities; we took out thousands of terrorists, including [Hezbollah secretary-general Hassan] Nasrallah himself, and Nasrallah’s replacement, and the replacement of his replacement,” the Israeli premier added before calling on the people of Lebanon to “take back your country, and return it to a path of peace and prosperity.”

Biden officials have reportedly admitted that ceasefire negotiations amid Israel’s war on Lebanon and genocide in Gaza have been suspended, despite public insistence by high-powered figures within the administration that they are working around the clock for a ceasefire. The Biden administration has given up on ceasefire talks after first proposing a deal for a 21-day ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel just two weeks ago, CNN reports, citing U.S. officials. The U.S. is “not actively trying to revive the deal,” the outlet wrote.

Tel Aviv's decision was made during a marathon session of the Security Cabinet between 16 and 17 October that Blinken took part in. “From within the Kirya, the Israeli military’s main headquarters in Tel Aviv, Blinken participated in the frantic discussions of the Israeli War Cabinet … that were occurring in parallel to conversations in the broader Security Cabinet,” DSN reports.

Solidarity groups marched in London, Madrid, Rome, Dublin, Berlin, Belgrade, and dozens of other locations, once again reaffirming their call for an immediate ceasefire and an arms embargo on Israel—a demand they have been voicing for an entire year. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom reported that approximately 300,000 people marched through London, with the police stating that turnout seemed “to be greater than other recent protests.”

At this point, it is not. Israel’s ongoing exercise in mad slaughter is of a piece with the rage unleashed by the slaveowner in response to recalcitrant slaves daring to break out of the plantation. And it is here where we understand the real “crime” of the Palestinians of Gaza – refusal to remain in the place accorded them by their colonizer and oppressor. That is, on their metaphoric knees, defeated and broken in mind, body and spirit.

U.S. spending on Israel’s military operations and related U.S operations in the region total at least $22.76 billion and counting. This estimate is conservative; while it includes approved security assistance funding since October 7, 2023, supplemental funding for regional operations, and an estimated additional cost of operations, it does not include any other economic costs. This figure includes the $17.9 billion the U.S. government has approved in security assistance for Israeli military operations in Gaza and elsewhere since October 7 – substantially more than in any other year since the U.S. began granting military aid to Israel in 1959. Yet the report describes how this is only a partial amount of the U.S. financial support provided during this war.
