100+ Doctors Demand Assange Go To Australian Hospital ‘Before It Is Too Late’

We, the undersigned medical doctors, wrote to the UK Home Secretary on 22 November 2019, and to the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice on 4 December 2019, expressing our serious and unanimous concerns that an Australian citizen, Mr Julian Assange, is at risk of death due to the conditions of his detention in a UK prison. Our open letter received worldwide media coverage and we received letters of support from doctors and others around the world. Now, having received no response from the UK Government, we call upon you to intervene as a matter of urgency.

The Trump Administration Has Declared War On The Palestine Solidarity Movement

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that President Trump is on the verge of signing an executive order that purportedly cracks down on antisemitism at college campuses. The move would apparently allow the government to withhold funding from schools that failed to effectively crack down on discrimination. Trump’s move is undoubtedly being implemented to strengthen the fight against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Shifting Our Comfort Zones To Face The Realities Of Colonization, American Genocide And Slavery

Clearing the FOG co-hosts, Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese, interviewed Jean-Luc Pierite, a member of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe from New Orleans. Pierite is president of the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB) and is active in programs to protect native languages. NAICOB is part of an alliance pushing for legislative changes in Massachusetts to protect native culture and heritage and improve education.  He describes the ongoing genocide and colonization of indigenous peoples through stories of current struggle and the necessity for solidarity and centering indigenous and black and brown voices at the forefront of work for liberation. The impetus for the interview was the recent 50th National Day of Mourning.

Concert For Assange Outside UK Home Office Demands “No Extradition!”

Hundreds gathered outside the UK Home Office in central London last night for a concert in support of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder and multi-award-winning journalist Julian Assange. Rap artist M.I.A. performed and was joined by Assange’s father John Shipton and fashion icon Vivienne Westwood. The event was organised by Don’t Extradite Assange, a newly formed campaign group that works closely with Assange’s legal team. Longstanding supporters of Assange were joined by fans of M.I.A. and fellow rap-artist Lowkey.

Doctors’ Climate Blockade

Doctors backing the Extinction Rebellion movement have blockaded the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to highlight the impact of climate change on public health. Thirty doctors from all over the UK joined the protest on Wednesday to call on the Government to take rapid action to create a carbon neutral health service. Two doctors scaled the building to glue themselves to the glass porch over the entrance, while several others held a banner reading "government inaction will cost thousands of lives".

Nearly 1,000 Amazon Workers Will Walk Out And Join Global Climate Strike

"As a leader, we need to reach zero first and not be a company who slides in at the last possible deadline,” Nearly 1,000 Amazon employees have pledged to join the massive upcoming Global Climate Strike. The employees will walk out on September 20th to demand that the company “makes climate a priority.” The 941 Amazon employees that have signed the internal pledge includes workers at corporate offices, according to Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, the group organizing the walkout.

International Day Of Action To Protest The Increased US Blockade Of Venezuela

On Monday, August 5, President Trump signed an Executive Order that worsens the US blockade of Venezuela. The order can be used to basically go after any person or entity that supports the Maduro administration. It also includes restrictions on travel for people who support the current government. Here is Popular Resistance's statement about the blockade. While the order has language saying it won't impact access to food and medicine, just two days after it was signed a ship carrying 25 thousands tons of soy was held up in Panama. Citing the blockade, the Maduro government decided not to send representatives to the next round of talks with the opposition in Barbados. Instead, millions of Venezuelans were urged to sign a document that will be delivered to the United Nations denouncing the blockade. Saturday, August 10, was declared a World Protest Day against the Venezuelan Blockade.

Socialists Of Color To The Front

One evening in late May, upward of 50 grassroots organizers from different groups around the country gathered at a union hall in Dorchester, Mass. They were grappling with some of the Left’s age-old questions: In a future where the Left wins political power, what would we like to see happen? And more pragmatically: What would it take to get there? A local community organizer sets the scene: “It’s 2019. Burning issues are facing our communities.” She lists off galloping inequality, a trigger-happy white nationalist movement, looming environmental disaster. It’s urgent, she says, to do “more cross-fertilization work” to harness progressive forces (like the striking teachers around the country) to build solidarity across issues. This discussion of base-building to include more different types of people is typical of many Left gatherings.

XXV Sao Paulo Forum Demonstrates Venezuela Is Not Alone!

From July 25-28 the XXV Sao Paulo Forum took place in Caracas, Venezuela, with the participation of 190 organizations, political parties, social movements, workers’ movements, parliamentarians and intellectuals from Latin America, the Caribbean and several continents. The date chosen for this historic meeting had a symbolic character to it. During those four days a number of coinciding historical events were celebrated such as the birth of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, the assault on the Moncada Barracks that marked the beginning of the Cuban revolution and the 65th anniversary of the birth of Commander Hugo Chávez. The Forum of Sao Paulo is the oldest continuing event of progressive unity in Latin America.  The first Forum was held in the city of Sao Paulo Brazil in 1990 as an initiative of the historic leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz and the then leader of the Workers’ Party of Brazil (PT), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The Global Crackdown On BDS Is Not About Solidarity With Jews

Israeli politics have moved into uncharted territory over the past several months, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found himself unable to form a coalition large enough to claim victory in last spring’s elections. However, even as the Israeli state enters into political turmoil at home, it is becoming increasingly immune to criticism from the international community abroad. In May, Germany’s government passed an anti-BDS resolution condemning the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, a nonviolent campaign to protest Israel’s military occupation of Palestine...

Neighbors Form Human Barricade To Protect Dad And Son From ICE Agents

“I could see if these people were bad criminals, but they’re not. They’re just trying to provide for their kids,” a neighbor told a Nashville TV station. A group of sympathetic Tennessee neighbors mobilized Monday to form a human barricade to successfully protect a father from arrest by two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Neighbors in Nashville first brought food, water and gas to the unidentified man and his 12-year-old son, who were holed up for close to four hours in the family van after it was blocked in their driveway by the ICE agents, who witnesses said were not in uniform.

Join The 50th Brigade

Cuba is the only country on earth that US citizens can’t travel to freely. In the 50 year tradition of the Venceremos Brigade, this July (2019), we will travel to Cuba to practice solidarity with the Cuban People and their struggles, many of which are due U.S. policy. We do this through voluntary labor, donations of material aid, relationships building and dialogue between our peoples. We have much to learn from each other about building a more just and equitable world. During the 50th brigade, more Americans than ever will have the opportunity to travel to Cuba within these values.

Rising Resistance And Solidarity In The Americas

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Sandanista Revolution in Nicaragua. Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated in the streets of Managua Friday night. This past week, mass protests erupted in Puerto Rico over long term corruption and subversion of democracy. A general strike is planned for Monday. This week is the 25th Sao Paulo Forum, a meeting of left political parties and social movements, in Caracas, Venezuela. We participated in a Sao Paulo Forum of Washington, DC in preparation for the upcoming meeting. A delegation of Venezuelan Embassy Protectors is traveling to Caracas to participate in it. Latin America has a long history of resistance to US domination and solidarity with social movements in the United States. This resistance and solidarity is critical to our success in the United States if we are to stop the machine and create a new world.

Jewish Youth Say “Never Again” As They Protest Trump’s Concentration Camps

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY—Planes on their way to the airport fly low over a crowd of young protesters chanting “Racist ICE has got to go!” More than 100 Jewish and immigrant activists have gathered outside the Elizabeth Contract Detention Center in New Jersey, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds approximately 300 detainees. Rabbi Salem Pearce leads the protesters in the Mourner’s Kaddish, a Jewish prayer of mourning, for six immigrant children who have died in U.S. government custody. “There are more who are not named,” she says. “There will be more.”

Palestine Liberation Requires National Unity, Democratic Representation & International Solidarity

Those who are still hoping that the new American agenda on Palestine and Israel is temporary, or reversible, should abandon this false hope. Washington’s complete adoption of Israel’s messianic, extremist policies regarding Occupied Palestine has been a long time in the making. And it is here to stay. Despite the unmistakable clarity in the American political discourse regarding Palestine, the Palestinian Authority (PA) is still trapped in a 25-year long, ineffectual political paradigm.
