Scale Up Mpox Response, Health Groups Urge

Thousands of people across Africa have been infected with the Mpox virus, resulting in hundreds of deaths and the ongoing spread of the disease. In response, over 55 health groups have urged the British government to support health systems in the affected countries. In an letter circulated on August 23, the groups demand rapid distribution of vaccines to countries in Africa currently struggling with mounting a response to the outbreak, as well as ensuring sharing of technologies between existing vaccine producers and manufacturers in Africa to increase global supply.

Capitalism Facilitates Firestorms, Floods And Tornadoes

Summer 2024 has been host to severe and persistent wildfires and tornadoes throughout the United States. Long before the summer, just from January through March alone, more than 2,669 square miles were charred in the United States. That’s larger than the area of Delaware and was already half of the total area impacted in 2023. Moreover, the National Weather Service confirmed 180 tornadoes in July, the most the country has had since 1997, when there were 190. Most of these tornadoes resulted from two storm systems: Hurricane Beryl and the July 15 Derecho — a very long-lived and damaging thunderstorm that can itself be as damaging as a tornado — that impacted Chicago.

Global Water-Related Conflicts Reached A Record High In 2023

According to a new report from the nonprofit Pacific Institute, violent conflicts over water increased sharply in 2023. The report found there were nearly 350 water-related conflicts globally last year, a record high. The latest update to Pacific Institute’s Water Conflict Chronology has revealed a huge increase in the number of water-related conflicts in 2023 compared to just 2022, with around a 150% rise. In 2022, there were 231 recorded conflicts over water, compared to the 347 recorded for 2023. In comparing to recent decades, the contrast is even more stark. In 2000, there were just 22 water-related conflicts worldwide, Pacific Institute reported.

The Weakness Of Progressive Latin American Governments In These Precarious Times

On 16 August 2024, the Organisation of American States (OAS), whose 1948 formation as a Cold War institution was instigated by the United States, voted on a resolution regarding the Venezuelan presidential elections. The nub of the resolution proposed by the US called upon Venezuela’s election authority, the National Electoral Council (CNE), to publish all the election details as soon as possible (including the actas, or voting records, at the local polling station level). This resolution asks the CNE to go against Venezuela’s Organic Law on Electoral Processes (Ley Orgánica de Procesos Electorales or LOPE): since the law does not call for the publication of these materials, doing so would be a violation of public law.

‘Operation al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 321: Ceasefire Negotiations To Continue

ِAn Israeli negotiating team will head to Egypt in the coming days in order to resume the latest round of ceasefire talks that started last week, Israeli media sources reported on Thursday. The team will hold talks with Egyptian and Qatari mediators and with U.S. officials over the status of the Philadelphi corridor and the Rafah land crossing. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield addressed the UN Security Council on Thursday, stating that a ceasefire deal was “in sight,” despite evidence that Netanyahu is once again aiming to sabotage the talks by insisting on holding onto the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors, hence continuing to occupy Gaza and maintain an indefinite military presence in the coastal enclave.

From Gaza To Venezuela, Erik Prince Plots His Next Move

As U.S. officials continue to reject Venezuela’s recent election results, Erik Prince, the founder of the notorious Blackwater mercenary group, has released a video addressing the nation’s opposition protesters, sparking fears that his private military forces might become involved. “Your friends from the north, though we’re not with you today, we’re coming soon. We support you to the end,” Prince declared in a social media video addressing Venezuelan opposition protesters. He added in a caption attached to the video, published on X [formerly Twitter], “To all those in the security forces, choose the side of freedom, not the side of socialist gangsters. We are watching, and justice will be done.”

Venezuela’s Supreme Court Of Justice Confirms Validity Of Maduro victory

On August 22, Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) confirmed the validity of the victory of President Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election on July 28. The TSJ issued a ruling on the appeal filed by Maduro, which affirmed that the results of the National Electoral Council (CNE), which indicated that Maduro won the elections with over 51% of the vote, were consistent with records from the voting machines.  According to ALBA Movements, a platform of social and political organizations from across Latin America and the Caribbean, “The TSJ of Venezuela has certified in an unrestricted and unequivocal manner the results of the June 28 elections. This act reinforces the legitimacy and transparency of the electoral process in Venezuela.”

Probing US Regime-Change in Pakistan And Bangladesh

Two former leaders of major South Asian countries have reportedly accused the United States of covert regime change operations to topple their governments. One of the leaders, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, languishes in prison, on a perverse conviction that proves Khan’s assertion. The other leader, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheik Hasina, fled to India following a violent coup in her country. Their grave accusations against the U.S., as reported in the world media, should be investigated by the U.N., since if true, the U.S. actions would constitute a fundamental threat to world peace and to regional stability in South Asia.

Gaza Ceasefire Talks: Why Palestinians Question The Recent US Proposal

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stopped in Egypt on Tuesday, August 20, one day after visiting Tel Aviv as part of a tour in the West Asia region to continue intensive diplomatic efforts to achieve a Gaza ceasefire and prisoners-for captives swap deal. The tour will also include a visit to Qatar in the upcoming days. Following his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, August 19, Blinken declared that Netanyahu accepted the recent ceasefire proposal made by the US, which the US claimed has “bridged the gaps” between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas. After announcing Nehtanyahu’s acceptance, Blinken declared that “it is now up to Hamas to agree.”

Israel Faces Collapse ‘In Less Than A Year’ If War Of Attrition Continues

The former ombudsman of the Israeli army, reserve General Yitzhak Brik, says his country “faces collapse in less than a year” if the war against the Palestinian resistance in Gaza and the Lebanese resistance in the north continues at its current pace. In an opinion column published by Haaretz on 21 August, Brik claims Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has begun to “sober up,” pointing to Gallant’s recent comments in which he called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promises of “total victory” in Gaza “gibberish.” “[Gallant] has started to understand that if a regional war breaks out due to failure to reach a [ceasefire deal], Israel will be in danger,” Brik says, adding that “Gallant already understands that the war has lost its purpose.

There’s Not Enough Daylight Between Democratic Party Policies And Project 2025 To Fuel A Solar Panel

As the 2024 election season heats up the Democratic Party has found its new boogeyman Project 2025 - a set of policy prescriptions developed by the conservative think tank, Heritage Foundation, with aims to implement them on the very first day former president Trump assumes the presidency, should he defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in November. As evidenced by recent political advertisements by the Democrats and their legion of Political Action Committees, the intent is to institute a profound fear factor by directly associating Project 2025 with a potential second Trump presidency.

Pine Gap Readies For US Nuclear War

The rapid expansion of the Pine Gap satellite surveillance base near Alice Springs, Australia from 35 to 45 satellite dishes, is designed to give the U.S. the edge in a potential nuclear war with China. Where desert oaks and spinifex tufts once baked in the Central Australian sun, three new white domes have mushroomed in a 14 hectare clearing along the western edge of the U.S.’ “most important surveillance base” in the world.  Under huge plastic radomes, three of Pine Gap’s new satellite dishes have been built to receive information from a new generation of U.S. spy satellites that bring a heightened level of surveillance of China’s nuclear missile launch sites at a time of increasing confrontation between China and the U.S. and its allies.

When Is ‘Recyclable’ Not Really Recyclable?

Is there anything more pathetic than a used plastic bag? They rip and tear. They float away in the slightest breeze. Left in the wild, their mangled remains entangle birds and choke sea turtles that mistake them for edible jellyfish. It takes 1,000 years for the bags to disintegrate, shedding hormone-disrupting chemicals as they do. And that outcome is all but inevitable, because no system exists to routinely recycle them. It’s no wonder some states have banned them and stores give discounts to customers with reusable bags. But the plastics industry is working to make the public feel OK about using them again.

Police Arrest Several Journalists While Cracking Down On DNC Protest

During the Democratic National Convention, Chicago police aggressively cracked down on a protest outside of the Israeli consulate. Officers carried out a mass arrest that included multiple members of the press, according to several independent reporters that were on the ground. Josh Pacheco, a photojournalist from New York City, and Olya Fedorova, a freelance photojournalist, were singled out by police and arrested and charged with “disorderly conduct.” Police reportedly damaged Pacheco and Fedorova’s camera equipment during their arrests, and they were released from the Area 3 police station in the early morning after being held in police custody for nearly 10 hours.

The DNC Fiddles While The World Burns

An Orwellian disconnect haunts the 2024 Democratic National Convention. In the isolation of the convention hall, shielded from the outside world behind thousands of armed police, few of the delegates seem to realize that their country is on the brink of direct involvement in major wars with Russia and Iran, either of which could escalate into World War III. Inside the hall, the mass slaughter in the Middle East and Ukraine are treated only as troublesome “issues,” which “the greatest military in the history of the world” can surely deal with. Delegates who unfurled a banner that read “Stop Arming Israel” during Biden’s speech on Monday night were quickly accosted by DNC officials, who instructed other delegates to use “We Joe” signs to hide the banner from view.
