The Trump administration is launching a pilot program in six states that will allow artificial intelligence to help decide whether elderly Americans can receive certain medical procedures under traditional Medicare. The move has been likened by critics to the creation of “AI death panels,” with experts and advocates warning it risks importing the most unpopular practices of private insurance into the federal health program.
The pilot, officially named the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction Model, is scheduled to begin in January and last six years. It will run in Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington. Under the program, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will hire private companies to use A.I. tools to make “prior authorization” decisions—determinations about whether Medicare will pay for particular procedures.

At the start of June, MSN, the world’s fourth-largest news aggregator, posted an article from a new climate-focused publication, Climate Cosmos, entitled: “Why Top Experts Are Rethinking Climate Alarmism”.
The article – by “Kathleen Westbrook M.Sc Climate Science” – cited a finding from the “Global Climate Research Institute” that “65 percent of surveyed climate professionals advocate for pragmatic, solution-focused messaging over fear-driven warnings.”
But there were a couple of major problems: the Global Climate Research Institute doesn’t exist, and nor does Kathleen Westbrook, whose profile on Climate Cosmos has now been renamed to ‘Henrieke Otte’.
The article accused those who advocate for climate action of overstating the harms caused by burning fossil fuels.

Over the past year, several studies about highly dangerous signals of Antarctica on the edge of major abrupt change have appeared in scholarly publications. These studies in premier publications expose rapid changes, e.g. (1) discovery of the western Antarctic Peninsula as one of the fastest warming places on Earth (2) ocean currents threaten to collapse Antarctic Ice Shelves (3) present day mass loss rates are a precursor for West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse (4) an unexpected ice collapse hints at worrying changes on the Antarctic coast. The new scientific narrative has scientists very nervous.
Abrupt changes have become more common in the climate system, but Antarctica is one region that nobody wants to hear about “abrupt change,” especially with the potential impact nearly impossible to analyze with certainty.

Hurricane Katrina first struck the United States on August 25, 2025 making landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane, the least powerful storm in that designation. But after being downgraded to the category of tropical storm, it gained strength as it traveled into the Gulf of Mexico and again reached hurricane status, making landfall again in Mississippi and Louisiana on August 29, 2025.
Residents of Mobile, Alabama, Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, and New Orleans and other Louisiana cities were all devastated by the storm surge. Twenty years later when we think of Katrina it is the images from New Orleans, where large portions of the city are below sea level, which come to mind.

In an unprecedented move, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 29 August revoked visas for Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
The State Department justified the move by citing PA payments to the families of Palestinian martyrs, President Mahmoud Abbas' plan to use a "constitutional declaration" to declare an independent Palestinian state at the General Assembly meeting, and Palestinian efforts to hold Israel accountable for war crimes in international courts.
"The Palestinian Authority must also cease its attempts to circumvent the negotiations through international legal campaigns, including appeals to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, and efforts to secure unilateral recognition of a possible Palestinian state," the State Department said in a statement.

In what may prove to be the most consequential redistricting case to come before the Supreme Court, Louisiana is urging the court to gut the main provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) and ban any consideration of race in redistricting. Louisiana filed its brief after the high court on August 1 asked the parties whether compliance with Section 2 of the (VRA) violates the Constitution’s 14th or 15th Amendments. By framing that question, the court may be signaling its intention to eviscerate the VRA.
Louisiana v. Callais reached the Supreme Court after a coalition of civil rights organizations and Black voters sought to reinstate a map that the state legislature had adopted in 2024.

On 12 August, Samar Abu Elouf, who won the 2025 World Press Photo of the Year for the picture above, posted on her Instagram account that her son’s close friend Sami Shukour had been killed while he ‘went to look for flour to feed himself and his family’. Samar had taken Sami’s graduation photographs just before the genocide began in October 2023. Sami’s family owns one of the most famous companies in Palestine, which made halawa with tahini. ‘Among the best in Gaza’, Samar wrote. Sami, she added, ‘was killed under a hail of bullets; the sound was very terrifying… We are not just numbers; each one of us is a story’.
We have now entered the last quarter of 2025, the days galloping rapidly toward another year.
Synergy Of The Sacrificed: Katrina And The Praxis Of Imperial Domination

Commemorating Katrina and its aftermath in 2025 comes at a time when a series of anthropogenic calamities from the genocide, ethnic cleansing and apartheid in Palestine, to the militarized federal takeover of Washington, D.C. (with the threat of more cities, such as Chicago, to follow) as part of a larger fascist consolidation effort are all exacerbated by an accelerated climate crisis that further elucidates the praxis of Imperial domination, which continues to oppress colonized and marginalized peoples across the world. Imperial domination can be described as the methods in which oppressive forces - including nation states and corporations (in many cases cooperating with one another)—exercise power over oppressed people through settlement, forced displacement, and other forms of socio-economic, environmental, and cultural warfare.

Ahead of its planned full-scale invasion of Gaza City, the Israeli army is causing widespread destruction in the Strip’s largest urban center, forcing residents to evacuate ahead of its publicly declared start date: October 7.
Recent reports from eyewitnesses and the Gaza Civil Defense show that the Israeli army has been using retrofitted armored personnel carriers (APCs) that are sent into dense population centers, including neighborhoods and displacement centers, before they are remotely detonated.
The attacks continue alongside an extensive bulldozing operation in the city and constant aerial bombardment. Between August 12 and August 18, the Israeli army destroyed over 400 buildings in the Zaytoun neighborhood and launched a limited ground incursion at its edges.

The Palestine Chronicle is not a militant organization. It is a modest, independent publication, sustained by small donations and animated by a singular mission: to bear witness. It tells the untold stories of Palestine, documenting dispossession, resistance and the endurance of a people condemned to silence.
In a media landscape dominated by powerful conglomerates repeating the language of governments, the Chronicle insists on a journalism of proximity — grounded in daily lives, in the rubble of Gaza, in voices otherwise erased. Its true offense, in the eyes of its detractors, is not invention but truth.
At the heart of this endeavor stands Ramzy Baroud. His career is the antithesis of clandestine.
India Defies Washington, Increases Russian Oil Imports
Russian oil exports to India are set to rise in September, as New Delhi defies new US tariffs imposed to punish the South Asian country for the oil purchases, Reuters reported on 28 August.
Three sources involved in the oil trade with India told Reuters that Indian refiners are expected to increase Russian oil purchases by 150,000-300,000 barrels per day (bpd) in September, which is an increase of 10–20 percent from August.
Reliance and Nayara Energy, which is majority Russian-owned, are the two largest buyers of Russian oil for India.
New Delhi’s purchases of Russian crude skyrocketed after the start of the war with Ukraine in 2022. After its oil exports to Europe collapsed in the wake of the war, Russia turned to India and China, offering steep discounts.
Haiti: Business Oligarchy Takes Full Control Of De Facto Government
With Laurent Saint-Cyr’s recent inauguration as president of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) of Haiti, alongside Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Haiti’s de facto government will be controlled by representatives of the economic oligarchies for six months. This situation is a cause of concern for the people and may have long-term consequences for the country.
The CPT was formed in a context of political crisis in April 2024, following the forced resignation of then-Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Its announced objectives are to restore security and organize new elections before February 2026, while in reality, it was created to serve US imperialist interests in the country and to suppress any expression of popular rebellion.

Agents with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out another raid at Lynn-Ette & Sons Farms in western New York on August 14, detaining seven farmworkers on their way to work. The raid came just months after another ICE raid, where 14 workers were detained.
The United Farm Workers labor union has condemned the raid at the farm that the UFW has been actively organizing in since 2022. Of the 14 workers detained at the May 2 raid, ten were ultimately deported. UFW Secretary Treasurer Armando Elenes labels the raids as “shameful employer complicity in the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate legal protections and lower wages for farm workers.”

Poverty is an artificial creation. Join political activist and Black Agenda Report’s contributing editor Ajamu Baraka and members of the Communist Party Marxist-Kenya on a trip to Kibera, Africa’s largest slum. It is symptomatic of a larger issue because, despite Nairobi being the wealthiest county in Kenya, contributing 27% of the country’s GDP, 60% of its 5 million residents live in squalor across 200 slums. Successive governments since independence have done little to change the status quo, leaving the people to predatory organizations that, at best, provide a band-aid to a gaping wound, or at worst, serve to depoliticize the masses.
Black Agenda Report & North-South Project for People(s)-Centered Human Rights have come together to re-release African Stream’s Mini-Doc: “Inequality in Kenya: View from Kibera”.

A new opinion poll by the Sadat Center at the University of Maryland finds a sea change in the American public on the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. For the first time, the percentage of Americans who say they sympathize with Palestinians (28%) exceeds the percentage who sympathize with Israelis (22%)[!!!] Some one fourth (26%) of Americans say they are equally sympathetic to both. So 54% of Americans now sympathize with Palestinians, either primarily or equally with Israelis. Some 12% don’t like either one, and 13% don’t know. So of the Americans who have an opinion and feel knowledgeable, actually 67.5% either sympathize mainly with the Palestinians or equally with them and Israelis.
