My name is Ana Inés Heras. I live and work in Argentina, although at different points of my life I also lived abroad. Since 1999 I have been working in several regions of my native country as a National Researcher for the Argentinean Council – CONICET, as a university professor and an activist. The regions we work in and organizations we work with vary over time, since our work is dynamic. Groups and people who reach out to us are integrated into our work over time at different geographical locations in our country (e.g., the North West, the North East, the Southern Andean region). Out of this work, and over the years, I supported the creation of a transdisciplinary and trans-organizational team, which works as a Co-Elaborative Research Hub, on issues related to direct democracy in different types of organizations (e.g., cooperatives, community groups, social movements).

It has been more than a week since the start of persistent warfare between Iran and Israel. It had begun when, on June 12, Israel struck major cities in Iran – including the capital Tehran. At least 224 Iranians have been killed, most of them civilians. Innocent men, women, and children in their own homes. As Israeli leaders boast of setting Iran’s nuclear program “back a very, very long time”, mainstream coverage fixates on “strategic victories.” But behind these headlines are shattered homes and broken bodies—often those of mothers, daughters, nurses—whose loss is reduced to a footnote. Behind these headlines are also a distressed, grieving, and infuriated diaspora.

As the Trump administration continues to ramp up its regime of mass deportations, grassroots organizers are growing the immigrant rights movement in opposition. Last week, Trump promised to pause some ICE raids at workplaces over concerns from employers in the farming and hospitality industries. However, this week, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan confirmed that the raids will in fact continue. “We’re going to continue to do worksite enforcement operations, even on farms and hotels, but based on a prioritized basis. Criminals come first,” Homan told reporters on June 19.

The devolution of Black politics has never been so evident and could not happen at a worse moment. While the crisis of legitimacy accelerates, and provides opportunities for movement politics, many Black people have declared themselves to be uninterested in political engagement or even worse, to be in solidarity with state oppression. Social media is replete with examples of Black people declaring that they don’t care about genocide in Gaza, or that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has nothing to do with them or even that they are glad other people are targeted for deportation.

To the surprise of perhaps no one, the tragedy of McCarthyism is being played out yet again as farce by the unimaginative buffoons running the U.S. congress. On Wednesday, June 11, The U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counter-Terrorism, chaired by Republican Josh Hawley, sent what appears to be a slightly modified form letter to the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and several other organizations. In the letters, Hawley accuses these groups of fomenting civil unrest and demands that they immediately “cease and desist any further involvement” in the ongoing protests in Los Angeles. The letters also provided a bullet-point list demanding that the groups preserve records going back to November of 2024, including internal communications, emails, and text messages, suggesting that the groups may be formally investigated by the Senate in the near future.

As community defenders, organizers, and residents resisted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles this past weekend, the state has responded by calling in the FBI and Border Patrol SWAT units, utilizing Blackhawk helicopters to deliver munitions and military-grade equipment, and mobilizing the National Guard and Marines to quell the justified uprising. As our comrades in SoCal BAP have clearly stated, this is domestic warfare. The connection could not be clearer between the specific kidnappings orchestrated by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Los Angeles on one hand, and the broad militarization of our cities and neighborhoods on the other.

Expressing her government’s unwavering commitment to defending the rights of Mexican nationals residing in the United States—whom she described as hard-working and honest people, regardless of their immigration status—President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized practices that criminalize the movement of people. We respectfully but firmly call on the US authorities to ensure that all immigration procedures are carried out in accordance with due process and within a framework of respect for human dignity and the rule of law. Sheinbaum presented her government’s position on the anti-immigrant raids carried out on Friday in Los Angeles.

The overland “Steadfastness” Convoy to break the siege on Gaza will depart from Tunisia on the morning of Monday, June 9, 2025, under the slogan: “The chains must be broken.” The convoy will travel through Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt, with the goal of reaching the Rafah crossing. As a member of La Via Campesina’s Arab and North Africa Region, the Association of the Million Rural Women and Landless (MRWL) is a key partner in the organization, support, and mobilization for this popular overland convoy. The convoy coincides with the Global March to Gaza and the Freedom Flotilla, where freedom-loving people from around the world will gather at Rafah on June 14, 2025, in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

On April 14, members of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) ratified its new contract with 97 percent approval. The nearly year-long negotiation process was steered by union president Stacy Davis Gates, whose leadership of the CTU as a militant force for progressive politics has followed in the footsteps of former CTU president Karen Lewis. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a former CTU organizer and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) middle school teacher, was also a key figure in the process. The CTU’s contract gains and movement building suggest a mode of successful resistance during a critical time for all advocates for public education to stand up to the budget cuts and draconian policies of President Donald Trump’s second administration.

Arsenal Football Club is facing legal action after sacking long-serving kit-man Mark Bonnick after he expressed solidarity with Palestine on social media. With assistance from the European Legal Support Centre (ELSC), 61-year-old Bonnick has filed a legal claim for unfair dismissal. A lifelong Arsenal supporter, he had officially worked at the club for 12 years, and an additional 10 years as a contractor, amounting to 22 years of service, before being abruptly sacked on Christmas Eve 2024. His dismissal followed a coordinated online smear campaign by pro-Israel Twitter accounts that accused him of antisemitism for posts opposing Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Mark’s dismissal is part of a wider crackdown on lawful political expression and a disturbing pattern of political purges in the workplace.

California Educators Sync Up Negotiations For More Leverage

Public school educators in 32 union locals across California are joining forces to maximize their power in a campaign called “We Can’t Wait.” It covers 77,000 educators—about a quarter of the California Teachers Association’s total membership—serving a million students. The campaign started with 11 locals that worked to align their contract expiration dates for the end of June: Anaheim, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Natomas, Oakland, Richmond, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Twin Rivers. And it quickly spread from there. Locals have organized educators to sign onto the campaign’s platform, rally before school and walk in all together, and join informational pickets. The goal is to have educators strike-ready in the fall.

Now is the time of monsters. From ongoing genocide in Gaza and Sudan, the foreign-backed forever war in Congo, and Western occupation and recolonization of Haiti to capitalist greed and state violence against immigrants, unhoused folks, and racialized people in the context of the fires ravaging the Los Angeles area, it’s difficult to feel optimistic about the state of politics in 2025. This feeling of dread can be only partially attributed to the Trump regime, given that these catastrophes started, intensified, or ossified under Joseph R. Biden. As the U.S. government continues to make a mockery of democracy and justice by, for example, putting a bounty on the head of the democratically elected president of Venezuela while threatening sanctions on the International Criminal Court for issuing righteous arrest warrants for Israeli war criminals, it can seem naïve to believe that if we organize and fight, we will indeed win.

Repression Of Panama’s National Strike Draws More Workers

After 11 days of strike, Panamanian workers from across sectors are not giving up their struggle against the economic plans of the government of President José Raúl Mulino, its security agreements with the US government, and its plans to reopen a huge copper mine that closed in 2023. Not only have workers continued to mobilize, but they have been joined in their struggle by more sectors of society. Workers claim that Law 462, passed on March 18, 2025, opens the door for the privatization of Social Security, increases the retirement age, and halves the amount of money for future pensions, among other things.

Boston - Students, professors and workers are confronting the Trump administration’s fascist crackdown at universities across the U.S. Since President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, immigration officials have revoked at least 1,700 student visas. In the Boston area alone, hundreds of students at Harvard, Northeastern, Emerson, Berklee School of Music, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts have already lost legal protection and face deportation.  Over the past few months, authorities have kidnapped and detained dozens of students and university workers who have opposed the ongoing Zionist genocide in Palestine.

Thousands of Africans across the continent rallied today under the unified call of “Hands Off the AES!” to express their solidarity with Burkina Faso and its revolutionary leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Demonstrations were held in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Liberia, led by grassroots organizations and people’s movements. Protesters strongly condemned foreign interference and affirmed their support for the country’s resistance against imperialist destabilization. This continental wave of solidarity follows recent revelations by Burkina Faso’s military authorities that they had foiled a major coup attempt on April 21.
