On Sunday, residents gathered in Barcelona under the hot midday sun armed with water guns, smoke bombs and an ardent desire to take back their city from the tourist hordes descending on it this summer. They marched through the luxury shopping district of Passeig de Gràcia to the shadow of Guadí’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in protest of Barcelona’s “touristification”: the restructuring of urban life in service of the tourism industry. Their slogan “Tourism robs us of our food, shelter and future. Tourist degrowth, now!” gets at the heart of the labor, housing and environmental crisis brewing in Europe’s second-most-visited city.

The coordinated assault on teachers, curriculum, and institutions of public learning is not an isolated culture war but a structural feature of neoliberal governance. In this context, the pedagogical philosophy of Paulo Freire demands renewed attention—not as an abstract theory of “engaged learning,” but as a revolutionary praxis situated in a broader Marxist tradition of class struggle.¹ Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, first published in 1970, emerged not from elite seminar rooms but from literacy campaigns among Brazil’s dispossessed.

European Dockworkers Refuse To Load Weapons Aimed At Palestine

On June 4, in response to the unfolding genocide in Gaza, France’s CGT dockworkers refused to load arms components bound for Israel at the country’s largest port in Fos-Marseille. Their action forced the ship to leave port without its deadly cargo. Across Europe, dockers carried on the fight. In Genoa, Italian dockworkers pledged to inspect the same vessel and block it if weapons were found. At the Italian ports of Salerno and Scilla, the ship sparked protests. Sophie Binet, the CGT’s national secretary-general, called on the French government to immediately halt arms deliveries to Israel.

Over 150,000 Protest Across Europe Against Gaza Blockade

Tens of thousands of people joined protests across Europe demanding the release of the Freedom Flotilla crew aboard the vessel Madleen and calling on their governments to take immediate action to ensure the delivery of essential supplies to the Gaza Strip. Demonstrations took place in dozens of cities across Britain, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, France, and beyond, just hours after Israeli occupation forces abducted Madleen and confiscated its humanitarian cargo. Protesters condemned the silence of European governments and institutions regarding the flotilla’s mission and the crew’s ordeal, warning that they once again failed to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law.

Friedrich Merz has been in office as Germany’s new chancellor a matter of weeks, and already he has the German capital aflutter with worry about the increasing danger of a third world war. More to the point, while Germans are fearful of such a prospect, the Russians are warning of it. In a series of recent remarks, notably on German television, Merz has stopped just short of stating that he intends to authorize supplies of German-made ballistic missiles to Ukraine and to do so without imposing restrictions on the Kiev regime’s use of them to attack Russian territory. This is a tripwire for Moscow, as Merz cannot possibly fail to see.

Thousands of protesters in Berlin, Paris, and Stockholm have demanded their governments break silence on Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, urging immediate international intervention and sanctions against the regime. In Berlin, thousands of people assembled at Oranienplatz on Saturday to protest Israel’s intensified airstrikes and ground invasion of Gaza. The demonstrators chanted slogans like “Freedom for Palestine,” “Germany finances, Israel bombs,” “Israel is a terrorist state,” and “Stop the genocide.” German protesters asserted that no person or state has the right to deny an entire people their rights, displace them, or commit acts of violence against them. Some German protesters of Jewish descent also joined the rally.

European development aid has entered a new phase of the European Union’s neocolonialist agenda. Its “Global Gateway” plan is a wishlist for infrastructure projects to be launched across the world by European companies, backed by liberal reforms to pave the way. At its heart: Africa, where at least half of all investments are set to land. The Global Gateway was introduced by the EU’s technocratic institutions in Brussels as a branding exercise for a new direction for European aid in the world, following the cracks the COVID-19 pandemic revealed in Europe’s supply chains. In effect, this plan has sought to secure access to raw materials as well as energy with a view to reducing reliance on China’s minerals and Russia’s gas.

On May 1, hundreds of events commemorating International Workers’ Day took place across Europe, with tens of thousands of workers mobilizing for better working conditions, an end to austerity, and a radical rethinking of the region’s role in the world. Rallies and marches sought to reclaim the political significance of May Day, as left and progressive groups joined trade unions to reaffirm the need for a militant labor movement to confront the far right, militarization, and exploitation. Demands ranged from workplace-centered issues, like improved health and safety and shorter working hours, to broader international calls for peace, the severing of ties with Israel, and a rejection of racism and austerity.

European Governments Are Using Deportation To Criminalize Palestine Solidarity

In April 2025, Greek administrative judges ruled to postpone the hearings for me and eight other European and British passport holders, who face deportation for our actions in solidarity with Palestine. The nine of us were arrested alongside 19 Greek students, in relation to the occupation of the Athens Law School, in May 2024. As the so-called ‘student intifada’ swept the globe, provoking disproportionate state responses, Greece became the first country to issue deportation orders against anti-genocide activists in Europe. Back in 2024, the nine non-Greeks were separated, labeled “outside agitators,” smeared in the media, issued deportation orders, and detained in a pre-removal detention center.

Europe Insists On Continued Sanctions, Troop Deployment In Ukraine

European leaders gathered in Paris on March 27 for another summit on the war in Ukraine, continuing discussions launched alongside peace negotiations initiated by the Trump presidency. The stated goal of the meeting was shaping a roadmap towards a “robust peace.” Judging from the conclusions of the summit, European heads of state continue to believe such a peace will be achieved by prolonging sanctions on Russia, financing more weapons for Ukraine, and preparing a so-called “reassurance force” to be deployed after a future ceasefire.

In his article about being invited by U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to a Signal chat with the U.S. secretaries of state, defense and treasury, the U.S. vice president and the directors of national intelligence and the C.I.A., Atlantic magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg writes that Waltz set at least some of the text messages in the chat to disappear. Goldberg wrote: Waltz set some of the messages in the Signal group to disappear after one week, and some after four. That raises questions about whether the officials may have violated federal records law: Text messages about official acts are considered records that should be preserved.

Ukraine Guilty Of Human Rights Violations In Trade Union Massacre

The European Court of Human Rights has found the Ukrainian government guilty of committing human rights violations during the May 2, 2014 Odessa massacre, in which dozens of Russian-speaking demonstrators were forced into the city’s Trade Unions House and burned alive by ultranationalist thugs. Citing the “relevant authorities’ failure to do everything that could reasonably be expected of them to prevent the violence in Odessa,” the court ruled unanimously that Ukraine violated Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life.

Because the present we face is repulsive.” With these words, Marta Collot began her speech at Potere al Popolo’s national assembly in Rome on March 15, marking the culmination of months of organizing and political discussion. The assembly launched a new program, developed through a bottom-up process rooted in labor and territorial struggles, outlined to serve as a framework for truly organizing the future. According to Maurizio Coppola, a member of Potere al Popolo’s national coordination, the process was launched for multiple reasons.
