Israel’s Lebanon Attack: Hungarian Shell Company Linked To Pager Blasts

Israel launched an attack against Lebanon on Tuesday, detonating thousands of pagers across the country in a move that targeted both Hezbollah members and civilians. The explosions caused widespread panic and confusion, reminiscent of the chaos seen during the 2020 Beirut Port explosion. Hezbollah soon confirmed that Israel was behind the operation. The attack, involving a Hungarian-based shell company led by a shadowy figure, raised concerns about the extent of foreign influence and operations in the region. On the first day of the aggression, at least 11 people were killed, and up to 4,000 others were injured, with 400 in critical condition.

US Navy Chief Unveils Plan To Be Ready For War With China By 2027

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the highest ranking officer in the US Navy, unveiled a plan on Wednesday to be ready for a war with China by 2027 as the US military is preparing for a direct fight with Beijing despite the risk of nuclear war. The plan lays out goals to be reached by 2027, including making 80% of the naval force ready for combat deployments on short notice. Franchetti told The Associated Press she wants to increase combat readiness so “if the nation calls us, we can push the ‘go’ button, and we can surge our forces to be able to meet the call.” Other goals include increasing recruitment, improving Navy infrastructure, removing delays in ship maintenance, and increasing the use of drones and other autonomous systems.

Is It Nicaragua That Is ‘Weaponizing’ Immigration? Or Is It Washington?

Claims that Nicaragua is “weaponizing” immigration by allowing free passage of migrants towards the U.S. border have been appearing regularly in the media over the last twelve months. The claim was made on NPR in January, in the Associated Press last October, in El Pais last November and by the BBC this July, to cite just a few. In May, the Biden administration accused the Nicaraguan government (the “Ortega-Murillo regime”) of “repressing people and preying on migrants,” imposing new sanctions on those it believed responsible. Is there any basis to these claims? Behind all such stories is Manuel Orozco of The Inter-American Dialogue, who has been accusing his former country of “weaponizing” immigration since at least early 2023.

Lebanon Deadly Pager Blasts: What We Know So Far

At least 12 people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured on Tuesday when pagers commonly used for communication by Hezbollah members exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon. The details of how this highly sophisticated attack was carried out remain unclear, though Hezbollah has blamed its adversary, Israel. The Israeli military has so far declined to comment. Here is what we know so far. When And Where Did The Blasts Take Place? The blasts began in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, with scores of incidents reported in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh and other areas of the country at about 3.45pm (12.45pm GMT) on Tuesday. According to footage seen by Middle East Eye, some of the detonations occurred after the pagers went off, prompting their owners to bring them close to their faces or hands to check the screens.

On Wednesday, the General Assembly is scheduled to debate and vote on a resolution calling on Israel to end “its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within six months. Given that the General Assembly, unlike the exclusive 15-member Security Council, allows all members to vote and there is no veto in the General Assembly, this is an opportunity for the world community to clearly express its opposition to Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine. If Israel predictably fails to heed a General Assembly resolution calling on it to withdraw its occupation forces and settlers from Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the United States then vetoes or threatens to veto a Security Council resolution to enforce the ICJ ruling, then the General Assembly could go a step further.

US Mobilizes Allies To Reject UN Resolution Against Israeli Occupation

The US government is lobbying its western allies to reject a draft resolution set to be presented at the UN on 18 September calling on Israel to end its illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. “Joe Biden’s government is urging Australia to say no to a draft UN resolution by the Palestinian Authority (PA),” Sky News Australia reported on Tuesday, adding that Washington is calling on its allies “to either reject or abstain from the vote.” The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will vote on Wednesday on the landmark resolution that demands Israel end “its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12 months.

The United Nations is hosting world leaders on September 22 and 23 for a “Summit of the Future.” Unfortunately, the draft action plan for the summit, while full of lofty language and some good intentions, does not challenge the neoliberal model or corporate control of the global economy. On the contrary, it proposes, for example, to “facilitate access of developing countries to the WTO and promote trade and investment liberalization.” It’s astounding that this plan, which is supposed to serve as the basis for an inter-governmental agreement, is so stuck in the past. For decades now, social movements and elected officials in many countries have become increasingly opposed to trade and investment rules that grant enormous privileges and power to transnational corporations.

In 1989 I served as an advisor to the first post-communist government of Poland, and helped to devise a strategy of financial stabilization and economic transformation. My recommendations in 1989 called for large-scale Western financial support for Poland’s economy in order to prevent a runaway inflation, enable a convertible Polish currency at a stable exchange rate, and an opening of trade and investment with the countries of the European Community (now the European Union). These recommendations were heeded by the US Government, the G7, and the International Monetary Fund. Based on my advice, a $1 billion Zloty stabilization fund was established that served as the backing of Poland’s newly convertible currency.

Most people believe in fair pay for honest work. So why aren’t low-wage workers better paid? After 30 years of research, I can tell you that it’s not because employers don’t have the cash — it’s because profitable corporations spend that money on their stock prices and CEOs instead. Lowe’s, for example, spent $43 billion buying back its own stock over the past five years. With that sum, the chain could have given each of its 285,000 employees a $30,000 bonus every year. Instead, half of Lowe’s workers make less than $33,000. Meanwhile, CEO Marvin Ellison raked in $18 million in 2023. The company also plowed nearly five times as much cash into buybacks as it invested in long-term capital expenditures like store improvements and technology upgrades over the past five years.

The lives and health of families in Texas and Louisiana are being directly impacted by Citi’s funding of nearby liquified methane gas projects (LNG), a new report released today shows. Over $36 million in health costs, two deaths, and more than 1,600 incidences of asthma symptoms per year in the region are linked to the $1.6 billion the bank has pumped into four LNG facilities in the Gulf South. The bank’s financed emissions related to these facilities is equivalent to over 6 coal plants or 6 million gasoline cars annually. The report, Citi: Funding Fossil-Fueled Environmental Racism in the Gulf South, quantifies the projected health impacts the facilities’ permitted air pollution could have on the region and highlights three communities in the area that are fighting back against fossil fuel development.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 345: Israel Threatens Lebanon Again

The U.S. envoy to the Middle East Amos Hochstein began a visit to Israel on Monday in a new attempt to diffuse tensions between Israel and Hezbollah as the Israeli cabinet is scheduled to meet today to discuss a plan to “enlarge the objectives of the war” on the Lebanese front. Israeli media reported that the U.S. presented a new proposal to define the border line between Israel and Lebanon, which Israel reportedly rejected ahead of Hochstein’s arrival. Meanwhile, Israel’s Kan channel reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clashed verbally with his war minister Yoav Gallan during a cabinet meeting over the Lebanese border options, as Gallant opposes a war in the north.

2,800 Wounded, At Least Nine Killed In Lebanon After Pagers Explode

Thousands have been injured and at least nine killed after handheld devices exploded en masse across Lebanon, and in some parts of Syria, in an apparent attack on Tuesday. According to Lebanon’s health minister, Firas al-Abyad, at least 2,750 people have been wounded, while more than 200 are in critical condition. That count was preliminary, as the reported toll was rising rapidly shortly after the attack, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon local time. One of the eight people killed was an 8-year-old girl. Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was reportedly minorly injured in the attack.

Ukraine War Turns Into Russian Roulette

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with U.S. President Joe Biden in the White House on Friday with the question of the use of long-range missiles by Ukraine to hit deep inside Russia on their agenda of conversation. But there were no announcements, nor was there any joint press conference. Starmer later told the media that the talks were “productive” but concentrated on “strategy” rather than a “particular step or tactic.” He did not signal any decision on allowing Kiev to fire long-range missiles into Russia. Starmer said no final decision had been taken on the Storm Shadow missiles and hinted that further developments may follow at the gathering of the U.N. General Assembly later this month. “We’ll obviously pick up again in UNGA in just a few days time with a wider group of individuals,” he said.

States Are Pushing Back With Anti-Labor Laws As Union Popularity Grows

Growing union organizing across the country has triggered an anti-labor legislative response in some states, but cities and counties are increasingly pushing back, a new report found. The report, released this month by the New York University Wagner Labor Initiative and Local Progress Impact Lab, a group for local elected officials focused on economic and racial justice issues, cites examples of localities all over the U.S. using commissions to document working conditions, creating roles for protecting workers in the heat and educating workers on their labor rights. In the face of increased worker organizing and Americans’ higher approval of labor unions in the past few year (hitting levels not seen since the 1960s), many states have introduced bills aimed at stopping payroll deduction for union dues and punishing employers that voluntarily recognize a union through the card check process.

(That plan was later delayed — and city officials have since acknowledged that they likely won’t meet the plan’s legal deadline.) The vote to close Rikers Island came from years of extensive grassroots organizing by reformists and abolitionists alike. But for those left caged there in 2020, the risks posed by COVID were immediate — not just illness and death, but new forms of the isolation, neglect and violence that already shape life inside.
