On the same day he was released from federal custody, the Trump administration on Friday informed Kilmar Ábrego García—a Maryland man wrongfully deported to a notorious Salvadoran prison rife with abuse—that it may deport him to the East African nation of Uganda. Ábrego García, a Salvadoran national who entered the US without authorization when he was a teenager, was released Friday from a jail near Nashville, Tennessee, where he had been held since June following his errant deportation to El Salvador and imprisonment in the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) super-maximum security prison. According to a notice sent by a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official to Ábrego García’s attorneys on Friday, “DHS may remove your client… to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours from now.”

The reported assault on one of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) former employees, Edward Coristine, was widely reported to be the casus belli of the federal attack on Washington DC.

US President Donald Trump is a very contradictory leader. He constantly implements policies that go against his stated goals. The perfect example of this is how Trump has treated BRICS, the Global South-led organization that now represents the majority of the planet. Trump sees BRICS as a major threat to US hegemony, and, in particular, the dominance of the US dollar as the global reserve currency. The US president has openly threatened members of BRICS to try to stop them from seeking alternatives to the dollar. In a press conference at the White House on July 8, Trump complained (emphasis added): BRICS was set up to hurt us. BRICS was set up to degenerate our dollar, and take our dollar as the standard, take it off as the standard.

After reading some 20+ pieces about the upcoming Trump-Putin talks I still have no idea of what the outcome might be. Trump's uttering about the talks and Ukraine are, as usually, all over the place. There seems to be some agreements already between the parties. If it were not so there would be no summit. The Russian side is aiming at much more than Ukraine. The size and high ranks of its delegation is otherwise unexplained: The Kremlin aide noted the very high level of the Russian delegation, which he said would include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Ushakov himself, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, who has been a key figure in the Ukraine settlement process. “In addition to the presidents, five members from each delegation will participate in the negotiations,” he said, adding that “of course, a group of experts will also be nearby.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia to end the war in Ukraine, as President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are preparing for a summit that will be held this Friday, August 15, in the US state of Alaska. “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” Zelensky said in a video address on Saturday. “We will not reward Russia for what it has perpetrated. Zelensky’s comments came after The Wall Street Journal reported that Putin told US envoy Steve Witkoff that he would agree to a full ceasefire if Ukraine withdrew its forces from Donetsk, one of the two oblasts in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. Russia controls most of Donetsk and virtually all of Luhansk, the other half of the Donbas region.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday moved to deploy the National Guard on the streets of Washington, D.C., while also officially taking over the city's police department. What's more, Trump suggested that this could be a model for other American cities. As reported by NBC News, Trump said during his announcement on plans to deploy the National Guard in the nation's capital that "other cities are hopefully watching this" and that he hoped it would make them "self-clean up, and maybe they'll self-do this and get rid of the cashless bail thing and all of the things that caused the problem." Trump then named Baltimore, Oakland, New York, and Chicago as potential future targets for National Guard deployments and other measures.

However, these clear violations of international law are nothing new for US presidents. Opposition to multilateralism has been a bipartisan feature of US politics for many decades. In February, Trump withdrew the United States from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), repeating an action he had done back in 2018, during his first term. The Trump administration also attacked the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and announced that he had cut US funding for both UNRWA and the UNHRC.
